Are online friends like placeholders for real ones?

Hm, no, I think online friends is a different thing, has a different quality, has different internal mechanics. I wouldn't reveal the existence of my chicken to anybody in real life for instance ;)

Not for me, and I don't think that's a healthy approach to any relationship TBH, they are human beings, if they are just placeholders to you then leave them TF alone and find someone permanent

They are if thats you're approach to online relationships. Some people, like myself, see more potential in them :)
