Part of the reason gods and religion became common is that people were looking for answers and explanations about the world around them - we have quite a few of those answers now, so no one would be looking for them nowadays, and we've increasingly learned to demand evidence instead of reverting to faith when someone comes around claiming a man in a chariot drags the sun across the sky every day

No they'd be rejected outright. That's why they rely heavily on indoctrination. Same with any stupid belief.

Today? With a complete different mankind? Nah!

Actually religion has little grip as such, but since it assumes all traditional powers and morals in its hands it is part of culture and heritage, and by that it perpetuates itself the way it is.
