Today I wear heavy makeup since I felt like it. Co-worker: Wow, you look better than yesterday. Were you sick? - Thoughts?

Do you usually wear heavier makeup? As a dark haired person, I know my hair color makes my complexion in the winter look a lot paler.

Make up cures illness I guess... when I put make up on I look like a vampire... maybe we have different brands.

He/she meant well, but the implication from your point of view sure came out unfortunate. An awkward encounter. If you'd been honest and answered "No, I'm just wearing more makeup now" they probably would have felt awful or awkward/embarrassed. But it's not necessary to and the awkwardness of the situation was incidental, so maybe it's better to spare their feelings. Or maybe it's better not to keep it to yourself and not to protect them from the truth. I guess it's debatable, or just up to one's personality/preference.

Sometimes whatever is going on your head can lead to your outward appearance looking less than optimal.

It's funny, yesterday someone I know was wearing eyeliner and she never does and I was going to comment but I just kept it to myself and thought the same thing, that I guess she just wanted to, so it sounds like I did the right thing? Anyway I get a version of this from losing weight, people speculating about my pending doom, which they are not wrong but still

My favourite come back whenever I would not wear my glasses and somebody would remark '' you look better without your glasses'' has always been ''yeah you look better when I'm not wearing my glasses too''.

I hate backhanded compliments. There is never any need to assign value to the way a person looks, unless its from a health perspective. Even then, that can be quite dodgy
