Is it okay to say the word nigger in a context in which it is not meant as an insult or do you think saying it at all should be avoided?

The word never really got to me personally, because I like an old saying my uncle Mark used to repeat: it doesn't matter what they call you, what matters is what you answer to...and as far as I'm concerned, getting angry or violent when somebody says it is answering to it. But everybody is not me. We have centuries of African slave trade, and the Klan, and second-class citizenship and 'sundown towns' and Jim Crow, then 'equality' that sees us jailed and/or killed way out of proportion with our population...so you'll have to excuse me if some of us don't have time for context and nuance and just go right to knocking a motherfucker out for saying it

TLDR say whatever you want at your own peril, hero
