Do you think working 40 to 50 hours a week is too much?

depends on how taxing and how much you enjoy it, but it's too much if it's not paid accordingly

Time alone isn't a good measure to determine if it is too much. It strongly depends on the net creative output, power, body stress and physical demand. When you are a writer 60hours is ok, when you work as a nurse 40 hours is too much under the usual conditions as the overtime that is constantly demanded add up without ever any relief.

50 hours a week is certainly unsustainable in the long term. As someone who's work never really stops, you have to just work hard in the time you give to the company, then finish on time (granted this doesn't happen all the time - but if you emphasise it, its more common than not).
