Sometimes (always) I can't tell if any political personality is in it for the money, they truly believe in it, or they get off on pissing people off. Curt Schilling (shilling?), for example, lost almost all of his fortune on failed business. But ever since then, he's been known as a right winger.
People want religious bigots, there is a constant demand for this.
