I think people should have freedom of speech, both legally and on a practical level (which means they shouldn't be fired, etc. for things they say on the internet). Also people do often change from when they're younger, I don't agree that they would necessarily go back and delete their tweets after a change of heart. And like I've said before, depending on how old they are, times may have been different when they were younger. It's obvious form history that everyone always helplessly falls in line with the society they live in, so they shouldn't be punished e.g. for homophobic in a homophobic society. (I didn't watch the video;p)
In 2012 she was 15. At age 15 (in our countries at least) you’re not allowed to have sex, or get married, or drive a car, or drink alcohol, or vote, as you’re deemed to be unfit to make such major decisions because you’re still a child. At age 15 you’ll say and do things that are bad for you and that you know you’re not supposed to do because you’re desperate to fit in and appear to be grown up in front of your mates. The world of the keyboard warrior is a hypocritical one at best and an absolutely noxious one at worst, where a fifteen year-old being considered to be still a child and therefore not responsible for their actions is perfectly acceptable when it comes to any form of sexual encounter but means nothing when it comes to saying stupid stuff on the internet. They either are accountable or they’re not: you can’t cherrypick for which aspects of life they’ll get sympathy and for which they’ll get vilified. Yes, she said hideous things when she was young and stupid - newsflash we all did (maybe not to that extent, but still plenty of stupidity). But she doesn’t say them now, as an adult, and that’s what counts.
I think she's sorry she got caught, if that's not who she is now, she would have deleted that shit on the quiet three milliseconds after her change of heart ... anyway it kinda depends from case to case - everybody doesn't have to be cancelled for everything...this specific case feels a tiny bit heavy-handed, maybe the girl not working there was for the best, but kicking them out completely seems like a bit much, probably didn't want to end up a target though
Does punishment make stupid people wise? Does it remedy the harm the stupid things caused? Does the example of punishment stop others of saying or acting stupid? If that would work, this would be paradise.
