Nah. I wouldn't say the word "pussy" at all for the longest time because I associated it exclusively with toxic behavior.
I think it's possible to say them and not be thinking about what they actually mean, though. Not that the misogyny and sexism is cryptic in these particular phrases, or at least not to an adult. But I think it's possible that the more 'family friendly' version that conditions people to accept these phrases when they're a little older is even more blatantly misogynistic. I'm talkin about the phrase, "don't be a girl!" Parents, the people we generally start life seeing as the paragon of righteousness, will say this to their children. So sure, they get older and thoughtlessly repeat a phrase like, "don't be a pussy!" They hear it as, "don't be weak!" but they fail to really consider why that's what it means. So I don't think everyone who uses them is actually cartoonishly sexist themselves. It's having thought about why they mean what they do, and then continuing to defend their use. Especially when you're approach to that defense relies heavily on, "no, this is completely unrelated to sexism because I've said it and I couldn't ever be sexist or wrong !" Because a complete inability or unwillingness to distance your own identity from the bad ideas you've been taught, and in fact we've all been taught, is a red flag.
I've used the former phrase sometimes ironically knowing that it's rooted in misogyny, but never the latter bc you'll never catch me with balls in my mouth ! however, both phrases are rooted in misogyny, in this idea that having or not having (even as a metaphor) a particular gendered part makes you more or less weak.
No, I don't remember it.
I've never used them in that way. But I do call people pussies and bitches sometimes. Given the wide range of targets I use them on I'm not sure the application, intent or context I use them in is sexist. So is using the word 'pussy' sexist? I often complement women on having lovely pussies... is that complement sexist...? Lets go deeper... some examples! 'urrr I don't think I should have a 2nd beer guys, its 8pm and I'm tired.... Jeff, don't be a pussy, I'm getting you another pint.' Is it sexist towards Jeff because he might have small balls and is acting like a bit of a bitch? :P orrrr how about this one... 'all THEY are good for is their pussy', which one is worse? I'd hope you'd say the later, but still I think the offensive bit isn't the word 'pussy'. In fact you could change it to 'ovaries' 'cooking skills' 'tits' hell a bunch of things and its still offensive because of the application, target and context. tl;dr I don't think a word can blanketly be called sexist.
It depends on the cultural context. In my culture you would not use those terms, not in earnest, not as a joke, only maybe as a reference to the culture where it is used. The meaning of those terms is always connecting socially unwanted behaviour with physical properties of the body of the addressed individual. This has a sexist and racist and dismissive component. From my point of view any person outside of the context of sarcastic comments, comedy, stand-up comedy and such using it only shows what a miserable undergraduate person of uneducated standard that person is. That sort of slang is used often by young persons struggling with growing adult, insecure, childish and socially inapt. it is aggressive speech intended to make the addressed person small, worthless and a victim. Basically it is also copied by adults of little understanding and insecure sexuality used for the same purposes. In that case it is even worse, since the talk is coming mostly from adolescent youngsters who are insecure and the copy is used by a full grown up adult who by using this marks the fact that he/she/it is still somehow not grown up, still in struggle with finding a responsible place and a responsible social position. Also it from there has infiltrated many social groups that use it to segregate themselves from others by language, behaviour and looks. They all share a tendency to use aggressive talk to people outside their group making use of abusive speech, dismissive wordings and various sexist and racist terms. By insulting and abusing others, especially weaker regarded persons and groups, they try to achieve a higher self confidence and worth and regard among their peers. Since women rank low on their scale to compare a man with the sexual organs of a woman is the worst insult. Though those male persons doing it need women as trophies to maintain their social status quite often. So in any case the use of such terms is either a mindless adolescent insult, a sign of an insecure adult or group speech or a well intended insult against one of these using their own miserable terms. With the exception of the latter it fires back on the user of those terms and shows that the user is not the rough, tough, hard boiled hero, but a sad asshole. Since the talk of inapt youngsters is now part of the culture such terms lose more and more their original meaning and now softened down to make them be used under general talking terms among good mates and such. Since Trump such terms also enter the sphere of official language. But it still is only used from top to bottom. As an alien you never are allowed to say this to anybody, while the people who created it may direct that sort of language against you either as an insult, as a joke, as a means of expressing that you achieved accepted group membership or such. But be aware it still is used from top to bottom. Never the other direction. In which case it regains its old meaning as an insult quite quickly.
