Once every winter solstice.. I grow it out then braid it into a long strand of hair, sort of like a Jedi Padawan. Then when the solstice comes I yank it out clean by tying both ends to a bowling ball and dropping it out of a nine story window.

I've never shaved them, and only trimmed them shorter once.
