Writer samples have a lower limit of 1.5k. If I have a sample that's more than 1,450 words, and as long as I include other works that meet the word count, would that be acceptable by you?

Hi anon! Thanks for the question. Due to such limited writer slots, we do not plan to invite writer guests, and all five listed slots will be available for general applicants.

Yes, contributor slots listed on the Carrd are inclusive of a small number of guests!

Will all artists have to draw something on a team with a chef, or will they be allowed to create food-themed illustrations of their own ideas?
As this cookbook is sectioned into different meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks, desserts), all page artists will be asked to draw one food spot illustration to feature alongside their partner chef's recipe. Page artists will also create a page illustration, which should also feature the chef's dish in some way and overall reflect the "theme" of that section.
All that aside, we'd like for page artists to have as much creative freedom as possible while still being able to create a cohesive book, so the extent to which the chef's dish is featured in their page art is up to the artist! It can be front and centre, or just in the background, or sitting alongside other foods ā ā you decide!
For example: in the lunch section, the chef has created a Phlegethon-Tomato Soup. The artist may choose to draw a romantic bistro lunch featuring roses, rosemary breadsticks, and of course, the soup; or they may draw a picnic lunch complete with sandwiches and chips, badminton on the side, and the soup in a thermos to keep it warm; or they may make the gods and shades work for their lunch, and draw Zagreus and Lernie (trying to) cooking the soup! Just a reminder that Alternate Universes are allowed ā surprise us!

I an a little concerned about your finance mods capabilities doing their tasks because they seem to be doing a lot of finance/shipping roles and donāt have many or maybe even any(?) completed? I was wondering if they had any support getting the task done as it seems theyāre very busy! Thank you!
Hello good shade! Thank you for your ask. We understand the importance of asking these questions and we're more than happy to answer!
Our finance/shipping mod Soul has aligned her schedule in a way that allows her to stagger shipping periods while also having some align in her favor. Having some zines align can allow for bulk ordering for common merch (charms, buttons, prints, stickers) and packaging, lowering costs for the projects and buyers. We are aware that she has several current shipping/finance roles but none currently coincide with Hell's Kitchens' current planned shipping period.
We've spoken with her about her workload around the time that this zine will enter the preorder, production, and shipping ā by this time, she will have completed several of her ongoing projects (such as Wish Come True, [[BIG SHOT]], COMET, Anthem of Freedom, and more), so we feel confident that she will be able to devote her time and energy to our project as needed.
Regarding support: She also has a few helping hands IRL that love to pack things with her! They do not see personal information or even data, and they are constantly sanitizing to ensure that any product that reaches buyers is safe, of good quality, and packaged with care. The mod team for Hell's Kitchens will also be here to check in with Soul and support her with organizational duties.

Are there any chances that the writer slots will be increased from 5? Even if the word count has to be reduced?
Hello there, thank you for your interest! Unfortunately, due to the inclusion of recipes and financial limits on number of pages, it is unlikely we'll be able to include more writers nor reduce the word count to make room for more (it was wrongly written down as 2 - 2.5K on our Carrd, the word count is actually 1.5 - 2K each). Several of the mods are writers who do zines, so we definitely understand where you're coming from. We're really sorry about this!

How will you be grading writers applications?
Hi there, thank you for your interest! As with artists, application information is currently tentative and will be finalised based on Interest Check results, but we'll be primarily looking at your ability to tell a story within a limited word count and technical writing ability (e.g. flow, thematic consistency, dialogue-to-narration balance). Food-related content will also be a huge bonus!

is there a specific style you're looking for in terms of the art? you said you'll be judging portfolios on (among other things) lighting, but the style i work in most often is graphic and stylized and uses mostly flats. are you looking for realism in all artist applications?
Hi! Thank you for your question. As we said, all information about applications is currently tentative, but please be assured that we are not looking for certain styles specifically ā such as realism ā in artist applications!
Lighting and the other items mentioned previously were examples of elements that can drive an overall strong composition, but are not absolutely necessary in every artist's preferred style. If your style works better with flat colors, then the team would evaluate your application with that in mind.
We encourage everyone to apply as we're looking for a variety of art styles! Hopefully this offers more clarity, and we hope to see you during our applications phase!
