I'm not exactly sure because our death tolls are crooked, even in some natural disasters. My first thought was hurricane Katrina, though, and that was in 2005. I think Hurricane Maria's death toll ended up being officially higher than Katrina's, but I'm not sure how many of those deaths are thought to be caused in a short amount of time due to the storm itself and how many of them happen in the months that followed, due to the US government's egregious neglect. But I think that at least 1,000 of the Katrina-related deaths are thought to be caused the storm itself.
