it's the kind of thing that's probably not actionable if you think in a playable scenario framework, but entirely possible in like, a spinoff work or maybe with ✈️ as a character in someone else's scenario.
of course it's that the trainer is based on the jockey and perhaps the irl trainer, who have heavy involvements with the bloodline ever since the grandmother. the trainer's father trained the grandmother, and he succeeded him and trained 🌼, ✈️ and 🧪. the jockey rode the grandmother, the mother, and the two brothers (his retirement race, he rode ✈️ one last time, despite ✈️'s running deteriorating considerably). it's heavy~ i think a little bit of the owner can go in as well, because horseracing was a family affair for him and his daughters after his wife passed away. he had a great investment in the grandmother's bloodline, naming 🌼's first foal after himself... and ✈️, the first foal of 🌼 to show any real promise, was named after one of his publications.
so about the trainer themselves... gender doesn't really matter, but let's assume furatore is an older woman. i'd like them to be on the older side. chronologically, she absolutely trained 🌼. she has a lot of experience, but never had a derby winner, so it's like the jockey. sometimes i think "it'd be nice if there was a tie to the grandmother too". maybe the trainer became interested in training because the grandmother was a friend from the same age group, so she came to admire her and watched her win yushun himba. i wonder if the trainer's father trained the grandmother? it would give them an excuse to be in close proximity. either way, the trainer is probably like a big sister or even auntie figure to 🌼. by the way, i'm not sure if the grandmother is alive or not. i think it's likely saige will not really confirm or deny her status beyond mentioning that she had won yushun himba... but irl the grandmother died resisting transport some time after 🌼 was sent to shadai.
she probably is not around ✈️ and 🧪 as children though... maybe she visited one day and observed them, and came to the conclusion that yes, 🧪 is clearly the superior one. but in the end, it's ✈️ who she ends up choosing when she's mature enough to debut. because some kind of destiny was felt. this is simply conjecture, but you hear a lot from online commentary after the fact that the jockey flattered ✈️ a lot and overpraised his abilities only because he won him the derby, and didn't seem as attached to 🧪 in comparison... (i mean... i don't think there's enough to say that. 🧪 only ran so many times. but i do understand and somewhat agree wirh what people are saying maybe). it's funny, the irl trainer from the interviews i've found was much more frank about ✈️, he got compared to other horses a lot.
isn't there a crazy psychological element for ✈️ that the trainer of her mother chose her over 🧪??? i think it would backfire when push comes to shove. (✈️ has many issues.)
i think their relationship is like~ well, there isn't really any familiarity like with the trainer and 🌼, so it's professional. i think ✈️ would prefer it that way, but around senior year will start cracking and acting out a bit more, which requires more care... something like that. but the trainer is close to retiring anyway, and ✈️ is a high schooler. it's tough~
they share the same dream, but it's achieved quickly, so after that it's a lot of meandering trying to find another goal. obviously it's "to beat ⚡️ again" but when the girl you're training will not say it out loud and is an expert in self denial, it's tough...
i really want furatore to ask ✈️ why she didn't go watch 🧪's hopeful stakes, only to be a little shocked by something strangely cold after trying to make up an excuse fails. wouldn't "i didn't feel it was necessary" be a little scary? the big sister has no sisterly instinct at all (or so it seems). she could only feel bad for 🌼 at that moment, knowing her personality and how she would want them to get along. but it's not really her business in the end, i say this but it's likely she will make the mistake of roping ✈️ into attending satsuki sho somehow -> downward spiral until senior summer begins

my japanese isn't very good, it's very babu level, so i'll answer in english too just to clear up any possible misconception. i only really am knownledgable about keiba, and i'm arab (from saudi) so talk about american and european horseracing is difficult for me to give an opinion about. but stuff like racehorsing in saudi and the emirates (dubai), i'd really love it if cygames was able to establish relationships here. of course with america, european countries, and hong kong too!
i want to see juddmonte and goldolphin horses as umamusume~ especially fantastic light!!

it's a pairing i liked before i got into uma, so i have a soft spot for it, it really used to be one of my favorites~
i think naturally with time, i found other pairings i was more interested in (especially since there are so many characters).
these days i have somewhat complicated feelings, being someone who has taken the ✈️ path, but i don't reject the pairing at all. i think that fine is a special person to shatan and vice versa. they can understand each other with no filter even though they come from entirely different backgrounds, and fine can approach shatan without being intimidated or fooled by her defense mechanisms. it's a good relationship. whether or not i am still on board the ship is something i am struggling with like crazy though... maybe when ✈️ comes out i will decide for sure!!
my favorite shakafai scene is probably from the end of the halloween event tho. wtf did she mean by that?

okay, let me give you a full bodied answer. i'm omitting jordan immediately because it's an easy answer. curren is also disqualified— she is popular, even if people miss the forest for the trees it technically doesn't mean she's underrated. so have a list!!
mejiro palmer - i actually don't have her ingame. i'm trying to avoid this kind of thing, but i want to include it since it can't be helped when i've done everything i can so far to make it happen 😭 she's a fascinating character with an interesting and well represented real life history. from her status as a sort of faux pariah among the mejiros to her lowkey onesided dependence on helios... the game seems to go much deeper into it than the anime. naturally since the anime is about teio and mcqueen.
hishi miracle - the so called "normal girl". she's actually a monster. what do you mean, 3 G1 wins? ofc number of wins=/= strength, but you understand when ypu look into it. she's a character people overlook due to erroneous memes about her being fat and lazy (🙄), and her contemporaries like gimusan, fine and kris s are much more popular, so is topro (same sire). now mirako is still holds a respectable popularity, but i really do love this every day girl who does not know how strong she really is. she self deprecates and compares herself to others constantly, but she's just as talented as they are. i love how sweet she is and how she does things at her own pace, how she makes an effort when it matters. when dantsu is released, people will see the disparity between the two of them. miradan let's go.. ☺️✨️
north flight - criminally underlooked character. i think mares tend to be, but it's even tougher if you're a miler or sprinter. of course i really enjoy the irl history, but also her rivalry with bakushin o in canon is pure HEAT. you get to see a side of bakushin o that only comes out around fuuchan, a somber side... i also love her interactions with the other tony bin kids (i'm a big tony bin fan in general). fuuchan being everyone's fashionista is also so endearing, she reminds me of someone i know irl ☺️ (personal bias, i know)
tap dance city - this is the number one most overlooked uma to me. if people knew the insane fuckshit she was on at least in eng speaking circles she would be much more popular. for one she came to japan the same day she watched ace win japan cup. zero language skills. her friends called her insane, but by the time she's in tracen she's already ~80% fluent. she has like 10 girlfriends who follow her around everywhere (not a joke or exaggeration). she wants to be rich so she can build a giant castle to house said girlfriends (+00 gen). she has no sense of reality. she hates common sense. doesn't take no for an answer. INSANE character. bonus that the trainer in her scenario had a similar personality to me so that was a bonus. i feel like if she had a more masc design she'd be in the yumejo top 100 every year, but the design we have could not be more perfect. unironic badass even though she's crazy. did i mention lesbian GOD. insane implementation of the real horse which i approve of
i wish i was joking about any of this but it's all true.

shortlist of umas i think are underrated but am not yet comfortable enough (didn't read ikusei yet, skimmed it, don't even have ingame etc): meisho doto (only skimmed and need to reread but PEOPLE ARE SLEEPING ON THIS BEAST), kawakami princess (need to read but what i know is 😶 holy shit), royce and royce (not released yet), maruzensky (don't have), super creek (i read it, but i need to reread severely it was like the second ikusei i ever read)
i think 93 gen is underrated in general.

i don’t think that pairing is a landmine, i don’t know if it will become one or if it’s alright as is. i’m a little lost right now. i can’t say that i didn’t develop complicated feelings the more i ended up learning. i remember way back before i ever fell into the rabbit hole seeing ✈️/00 oshis openly expressing their disdain… i could only think “isn’t this excessive? you’re not making a good case”. it was close to when i started playing the game, so i didn’t know much about the history yet if at all. i didn’t get it, but i think now i understand perfectly! it is quite frustrating, but everyone has been put in a difficult position.
“blame” is a strong word, it’s too strong for the sentiment i feel (it’s much milder than that), but i do blame saige.
in the end… if i want to be frank here, lately i feel “i wish they didn’t rush into pairing characters up so much”. this is a sentiment i feel very generally about the series. i understand that some characters may not have their contemporaries and such… i don’t think it’s a bad thing, but the more i end up being a keiba andy the more inconvenient it is. because a lot of these patchwork pairings have a sort of seniority in the fandom… so when a new pairing that is a little more in line with history pops up, there is tension and pushback. the two parties become enemies. i find it really unfortunate. i wish people would get along or at least ignore what they don’t like. a tiny, tiny part of me wishes ✈️ wouldn’t be released for this reason.
i’m someone who tries to hold on to the belief that the series and its characters=/=real life, and that the dynamics in the game outside of real life history must not be ignored… but sometimes lately it’s difficult. i’ll say it. the fans are an issue for me. not like all fans, but people get so militant, i always hear “i don’t wait pairing A to erase pairing B”. i’m a little tired of it. it happens a lot with older pairings. i have no idea what the solution is aside from “people need to be a little more reserved about it”. i feel like if you can’t handle a historical pairing or rivalry taking precedent sometimes or even showing up at all, maybe this series is a difficult one to keep up with.
but… i think the case of the characters involved here is very strange though. there’s no real life circumstance preventing ✈️. it’s only saige that’s deciding to prevent it. which is fine, i think it’s good actually, i don’t think they should blow their load and add every highly anticipated horse at once. but the other cases of what i ended up calling “patchwork pairings” are a result of various 大人の事情 preventing a certain contemporary… it’s really contentious among fans so i’m scared of giving examples. i hope you can guess 🥹. so i think in the end, they wanted an alternative. not to replace it, but to explore other possibilities. tbh, i really respect it. but i feel like no matter how much i fight it, becoming a fan of ✈️ has kind of ruined it for me a little… i’m sad because i used to like it a lot, but now i’m just confused about how i’m supposed to feel…? i don’t want to be painted as someone who rejects it because i don’t reject it at all… 🥹 it’s unfortunate but i feel like ✈️ fans do have this kind of reputation (even though …. it is …. sadly understandable as you say)

anyway, i really hope my answer doesn’t upset anyone. that is how i feel though. i think i have a strange perspective due to being a (relatively) new fan (i’ll be crossing into one year soon, idk if i can say new anymore). so i hope it doesn’t cause discomfort, i’m not trying to call anyone out especially since the community is unironically amazing… but also this is the first fandom where i felt this kind of insane pressure, but other series don’t have this kind of irl history vs original contents conflict. at worst you have “pairing official pushes” and “pairing that occurs naturally” in other series. if anything, for the most part, this series lacks such favoritism save for very very rare instances (no one ask me to elucidate about this. cuz i feel like this comes down to each person’s personal bias). in this series you can feel comfortable shipping almost anything. i feel very spoiled by it coming from other similar yuri fandoms where the balance tends to be way off 🤣

well, i do believe saige is planning for ✈️ from the start, and that it’s not just meaningless teasing. i don’t know if i’m ready at all. my fault for getting attached to my fake version i suppose.
i don’t think there is anything i’m dissatisfied with. in fact, i keep going back to certain things and realizing “oh… it’s like that because ✈️ isn’t there…” even when it’s incredibly small things. but i never feel crazy or delusional somehow. i wrote an fanfic about 🐉 not existing, so i know i have the capacity for that kind of delusion. but ✈️ not existing in the game just feels like thar entire concept in canon practice. it’s more deep that i could ever imagine. the fact that that thoroughline continues with 💃, even if it’s only a little bit, is pretty exhilarating. no, it’s not just a little bit. the fact that there’s no derby event is the biggest bombshell there is. it kind of confirms everything. that’s why i can’t get over it. i don’t know about anyone else, but it feels really rewarding weaving your way through it. so i don’t feel as taunted by it as some other people do.

buenachan ‐ even though she bad a beta design i got somewhat attached to, the new design blew me away. it is THE buenachan. i think you look at it and go THE buena vista.
doto - if you've seen any photos of irl dotosan, you would understand. i think it's perfect. they truly have the same soul
fuuchan - irl, fuuchan was an outstanding mare who inherited all the strengths of tony bin. you can feel it here. i feel that her being a fashionista also represented the fact that her stablehand (who was famous for being a rare female stablehand) handmaking her menkos revolutionized giving horses distinctive "fashions" not just to distinguish them on the turf, but as endearment. high girl power.
taishin - look at the real horse irl! it's such a good representation!
opera o - perhaps this may not be a design thing, but i do love that many of her mannerisms may be based on wada jockey (who was ironically no overlord, but a rookie)
gimusan - if you've seen the real life gimusan!!! then you understand!!! both cool and cute elements, which the real life version boasts, have been perfectly captured.
tap - the real life horse was very haughty and stubborn. i look at her face and think yeah, this is a girl who will only do what she wants. it's great.
ayabe - i don't think you can come up with a more representative design. thank you.
kris s - just as handsome and cool as the irl version. i understand.
gurunee - the fashionable and flashy irl horse who was quite elegant and striking was brought to life in the uma version. i could not ask for more.
shatan - i have a plush of the real thing sitting on my desk and a poster i have not hung yet, i like how the real life one looks, so me praising the design is for real 🤣 the newer sbfk is very reflective of how cool and flashy the real life one looked.
zunchan - i like that her look is clearly inspired by the irl regalia the horse wore during yearly ceremonies (i apologize for not researching about this yet). also no reason has many silly episodes, i look at the uma design and think "yes, she looks strong, but i can believe she fell out of the gate in satsuki sho".

and as a fan of the 02 generation, i felt a little disappointed by durandal, a horse that i did want to be implemented (it's mostly because she doesn't seem to interact with her contemporaries as much as i would have liked but especially fine)... 😭
i liked rice in the anime buy the difference in demeanor in the game made her go down the ranks a bit.
i don't really care about kitasan that much either (SORRYYYYY!!!!!) maybe if they add rainbow line, maybe... (does not elaborate)
