Since this is anonymous, I will choose a random book from my list. If you come out of Anon I will choose a book recommendation personalized for you.
I will suggest The Divided Self by R.D. Laing. Our self-perception is undeniably skewed and built on fragile structures in our mind, and they are truly fragile. We recreate ourselves based on our environment, but often there is a divide, a filter of what is presented and what is within, but at times the lines of what to identify with blurs and so does our ability to be authentic with how we feel and see ourselves in comparison to what is presented. Sometimes we are suffocated in an attempt to adapt to an environment that does not welcome our authenticity. The book talks about the factors that go into what shapes the ego, or other structures in the mind that I spoke of earlier; it touches on the extreme sides of self-delusion and denial, and the struggle between navigating between the internal and external world - how they relate to each other, how they influence each other, and how when attempting to cope with existence they sometimes even contrast or go against each other.
The book talks about "ontological insecurity" - a term meant to suggest an existential uncertainty that a lot of people face when it comes to the perception of the self, and how the self relates to & is influenced by others. Alienation of the self as a psychological defense mechanism.
