Welcome to our Dungeon Meshi Zine! Please keep questions respectful—we are here to answer questions not entertain rude remarks.

Hello! Thank you so much for getting application results out so fast, that was a ton of work.
Would the mods be willing to provide feedback on rejected applicant's portfolios? I 100% totally understand if you don't want to, it's time consuming and somewhat contentious. I also just want to assure you that I'm not asking in any sort of adversarial way, I completely respect your acceptance decisions. I just wanted to ask because it's always helpful to get feedback on portfolios when possible! Thank you!
Hello! If you would like portfolio advice, please send an inquiry to our Email with specific questions and areas in which you would like to improve and we will do our best to respond with constructive feedback. Just due to the sheer number of messages we're dealing with right now we unfortunately can't truly guarantee a response (or at least a full one), but we'll do our best to help you with your questions as we do believe in the power of feedback. Thank you so much for your support of our project and we wish you the best with your future work!
If we haven’t gotten the results yet is it safe to say we didn’t make it in? Or how are they sent? :0
Hello! We have about half of our Emails left to send, not sorted by acceptance or rejection, just numbers. We've been wrestling with Gmail and simply need to spread things out. There's also a chance that your Email could have ended up in your spam. If you're still waiting for an Email after we post about having sent them all out then please message us directly.
Hi! Around when can we expect application results to be sent out?
We plan for application results will be sent out sometime tonight. At the latest, they will be sent tomorrow morning.
hello! would you be willing to release how many applications you got for each position/what portion of the applications were for each position? of course when you aren't as busy with results and what not. im just curious for curiosity's sake.
Hi! We've gotten this request a number of times and we'd rather not share exact numbers. However, we totally understand your curiosity so we'll at least share that we received the most page applications, followed by merch applications, followed by writers. We hope that all of you feel proud of your hard work, as every single applicant deserves praise!
hi! do i have less chance of being accepted into the zine if i applied near the closing hour?
Hello! Time at which you applied will not affect your candidacy, as we wanted to make sure all applicants had an equal chance. Final evaluations will only be made now that applications are closed. Thanks for applying!
Hello! What are the terms for usage? For artists, are they allowed to reproduce and sell their work once the zine ends?
Hello! Yes, once the project is nearing its end we will announce to contributors when all rights return to them, after which they may post, produce, and sell their art however they'd like. Merch artists may have to wait until leftovers sales end so that we can make sure to clear out our stock, but after that are welcome to produce merch from their designs themselves.
I can't seem to find this information, I apologize if I missed it somewhere! I wanted to ask what time zone "Midnight on June 12" is referring to? Thank you so much!
Hello! We typically operate in EST, but we do want to give everyone their best chance to apply, so at very earliest we will close applications at midnight CST on the 12th. Depending on our moderator team’s schedules, we may be able to wait until midnight PST, but if you want to guarantee you won’t be late then send yours in by midnight CST. We’ve also had some questions misunderstanding that we’ll close tonight, on the morning of the 12th—we’ll close at night on the 12th so you’ll have the full day.
Hello! Is it okay if I submit both an artist and merch application, but in case of being accepted, be selected for just one role? Thank you!
Hello! We do generally recommend only applying to both positions if you are willing to take on the workload of both, but you can leave a note at the end of your applications specifying that you'd strongly prefer to only be given one. Truthfully, it is very unlikely that you will be chosen for both regardless, as, if we do take on any contributors for both roles, they would be extremely few as we want to maximize space for more artists.
Hello! I haven't seen anyone ask this or the information on your Twitter bio but will this zine be for-profit or non-profit? How will the contributors be compensated for their work?
Hi! Information like this can be found on our Carrd under FAQ! This zine will be for charity, with all profit at the end of the project going toward a reputable charity combatting food insecurity (the exact charity has not yet been selected). Contributors are guaranteed a digital copy of the zine and, if sales allow, we aim to compensate contributors with a full bundle (zine and merch) free of charge. In the event that we do not meet that goal, contributors will be able to purchase items at production price, highly discounted from the sales price.
Hi! Maybe a silly question, but will non-18+ zine contributors possibly be able to opt in to view the final 18+ zine?
Hello! All contributors, regardless of whether they will be contributing the the 18+ side zine, will be able to opt in or out of viewing the 18+ servers of the Discord channel as well as receiving a copy of the digital side zine once complete. All contributors are guaranteed a (digital) copy if they would like it!
Are contributors notified of their inclusion/rejection all on a specific date once applications end, or are some being accepted/rejected before the applications end
All applicants will be informed of their application results at the same time after applications end--we will not be making final application decisions until we have all applications. We hope to send out all results on the 17th (five days after applications close), though we may need a few extra days due to the high volume.
How will comic artists and comic writers work together? Will they be in direct communication to plan things together or is it a "writer makes the script on their own, then the artist is given the script and draws it" type partnership? Will they be paired before or after pitches are assigned?
If there is sufficient interest in working in comic teams, we will make the teams based on shared interests and provide a private channel for the team (writer, liner, and colorist) to discuss throughout the process. This way the artists will be involved for the writing process and the writer will be present for the illustration process, both able to give feedback throughout. Comic teams would formulate their pitches as a group. However, if there is not sufficient interest in these roles, we will have some artists writing and illustrating comics on their own.
Hi! I totally understand that the zine is not going to have any dubious themes whatsoever, but I wanted to know if you will automatically eliminate applicants that usually partake in dead dove/proship content on their social media since we need to link one?
Hello! As we've answered before, applicants' personal preferences or posting content outside of the zine is something we will not be considering. No applicant will be disqualified for content on their social media excepting hate speech, serious harassment, bigoted behavior, or other behavior which violates our guidelines. Applicants will be evaluated by the quality of their submitted pieces. All other information will remain your business. That being said, discussion of "dead dove" content will not be permitted in the server and all content submitted to the zine must follow our content guidelines.
Hello! In a previous answer you said "We recommend against including sketches". I don't have any finished piece of dunmeshi characters, so I thought about including one page with some sketches, just so the mods can have an idea of how I'd draw them. Would this be of any use or it's better if I just focus on regular pieces?
Hi! Ultimately, this decision is up to you--there's not a true right answer and both options are fine. We generally recommend against including sketches because a portfolio is meant to show your strongest work and the inclusion of incomplete pieces may unintentionally give the impression that you will not be able to provide a polished piece for the zine. However, if you feel confident that the rest of your portfolio makes clear that you have this ability, you may find it worthwhile to include the sketches as we do like to see your takes on the characters. Otherwise, the place of those sketches may be better used by a more polished piece. Some advice that may help to obviate this decision entirely would be to delay your application a bit until you can polish up one of your sketches into a complete piece. There's no harm in applying a bit later and then you won't have to choose. Again, ultimately, any of these options work totally fine. It's your portfolio, and there are many different ways to show your skills.
Omg! Did someone actually send in an application with A/I? That’s so sad. Would you mind sharing the name so we could check if we’re following/supporting by accident?
Yes, our public reminder of our zero tolerance policy was in response to an application we received which included AI works. However, to protect the safety and privacy of all of our applicants we will not be sharing any names or account information regardless of circumstances. We hope you understand. We agree that it is a shame that AI has begun attempting to invade a space crafted by creators for creators and hope that this pattern does not continue. Meanwhile, we encourage you to be vigilant but generous in your support of creators. There are still so many incredibly talented and hard-working artists to follow and support.
