Quick! Drop some random lore for Dead Rock Stars that you haven’t had a chance/reason to talk about yet!
HMMM. I would say… it’s kinda more lore for the whole universe than that one story but I think it counts: I have multiple stories all set in one world, several of which predate the 80’s one. All their plot lines and events influence all the other stories in working on, like ripple effect stuff. It’s really fun to set up the dominoes
If that doesn’t count, then I’d say… Dead Celebrities in-universe has a reputation for being really edgy and spooky because of their stage makeup and sound but all the members are just sort of ”uncool kid lunch table” dorks, for the most part. It’s Cherry’s band that’s the one to be scared of, those girls are partying havoc wreaking hellraisers.
What’s your newest Dead Rock Star’s OC and what roll do they play in the world?
Ohh that’s hard to say. The newest newest one is basically just a design I don’t have background info for really, so I’d have to say… maybe Eddie is the current newest main character
He’s Dead Celebrities’ drummer, and each character in the band kinda represents their own sort of means of dealing with grief and trauma… I think Eddie’s thing is while he’s shaken up by the serial killings in their town, he’s trying to play it somewhat cool and come at it with logic. He does photography as a hobby, so though initially he doesn’t wanna get super involved he reluctantly decides to help catalogue some clues/evidence of weird shit going on in their town to help get to the bottom of the mystery. He’s sort of a realist/the more emotionally stable one among a lot of his friends too which helps while they’re all dealing with the stress and trauma
He’s not like super duper new, he’s been around like two years, but it’s weird thinking he came around that recently? It’s like a “he always belonged here, weird to imagine it without him” thing
What’s your oldest OC for your Dead Rockstars world? How have they changed since their conception?
It’s hard to really gauge who is the Oldest Oldest because Jesse’s been around for over a decade technically but is unrecognizable in his current form compared to his oldest. It’s sort of a ship of Theseus situation, you feel me? How much can it change before it’s not the original thing
If I had to answer, I’d say Donnie. He’s probably the one who is most consistent with his oldest iteration from 2014, and I’d consider his whole arc in that regard to be one singular character.
His character concept was initially that he was a burned-out former children’s hospital volunteer magician, who accidentally gained ACTUAL magic powers and found himself traveling through dimensions. He was mentally ill and could use his mental state to manifest different magic powers that’d assist him in his travels/in goofy cartoony battles. I was a literal child when I made him so forgive that the concept is Like That
Nowadays he’s an anxious med school dropout who dropped out because of chronic health issues, so he could focus on his musical passions and reach stardom before his health prevented him from it.
His personality is pretty overall similar to his earliest form, just a bit less edgy compared to my teenage sensibilities
What’s the weirdest thing that inspires/has inspired your OCs?
All of my current OC’s have pretty silly origin stories lmao. It’s not really that weird in general to be inspired by music, but my character Donnie originated as a literal personification of a song (Dr. Feelgood, Mötley Crüe) and over the course of like ten years he evolved into something nearly unrecognizable
I think his brother/my character Wiley was inspired by Gamzee Homestuck’s design without even having read Homestuck when I created him askdhfjfhfhf
Other than that, sometimes just a persons general face/vibe or even random Pinterest aesthetic images can spark entire OC ideas for me.
Is there an OC who you liked a lot more than you expected to?
My character Pink from my emo themed side project! The washed up former child actor screams bad boy guy. He was supposed to be kind of an unlikeable antagonist / side character type but I got really attached to him unexpectedly lol. He’s still an unlikeable jerk but a sympathetic one! I think he’s kind of a way of giving the angsty teenager I used to be/that still exists in my brain somewhere a big hug instead of simply cringing at them
I realize I’ve been calling it Dead Rock Stars instead of Dead Celebrities sjjdkdkgh sorry I just woke up
Since I'm thinking of having references of Dead Celebrities or Gutter Ballet or whatever it's name is/going to be in my story is there anything I should know, like what the story's date since mine while doesn't have a exact year it does take place before 1992 but after December of 1985 because Broken Wings is perfect. By the way this is General Rusty and since I'm suppose to also send threats... I'm going to break into your house and take the laces out of all of your shoes so you will have to buy new laces and re-lace them
I’m honored by you wanting to include references to the story in yours omg!
The story takes place roughly around 1985-1989, somewhere in between there. Their universe’s timeline isn’t a 100% exact parallel to ours so you can be a little loose with it
Also NOOOOOO those COULD you… I recently had to re lace my converse and I briefly knew what it felt like to experience eternal suffering
Did any of your band ocs not originally plan to get into music at all? Or the opposite, did any of them always dream of being in a band?
Interesting question! I think it differs for all of my main OC’s, tbh
Starting with Jesse, he always played music since childhood and always had it as his goal to make it his job, though seeking fame was never on his personal agenda— he’s mostly just in it as an outlet and hoping other people can find solace in his art. I think he never really anticipated it actually being viable as a career for him though
Someone like my guy Eddie however was all about the “I wanna be a ROCK STAR” from the get go, he’s a confident dude and there really wasn’t any doubt in his mind at any point he was gonna make rocking out his whole thing
Pink on the other hand always liked music but I don’t think making it came to him til he got around to his teens— when he started having problems in school and with his family as a kid it was a means of him channeling his energy into something that was less destructive
My character Wiley I think didn’t necessarily anticipate it at all. I think he was more just bored and wanting something to do and when he saw his friends getting into learning instruments he was like “oh shit can I try?” and decided it’d be fun to just kind of stick with it. I think up until the band took off he was more of a visual artist and probably did posters for local bands or sold weird art pieces at swap meets or something
That was a bit of an infodump LOL if you have any other characters of mine whose relationship to music you’re curious about feel free to ask specifically, those were only just a few examples
If ziggy and carly had jobs what do you think theyd be
(This is about my dogs not OC’s, for anyone reading)
Like dog jobs or if they were humans and had jobs? When Ziggy gets walked multiple people have joked he ought to take up work as a sled dog because be fuckin pulls lol
Hmm. the way ziggy screams out the door when people come to the house I think he’d be some sort of guard type job, but a useless one like a mall cop or something
Carly would be be like a Girl Scout selling cookies something, she’s perky but polite and really good at using her charms to convince you to do stuff for her
Favorite 80s band???
As far as artists who I’ve listened to the majority of the catalog of, I unfortunately have a big soft spot for Motley Crue sound wise lol. Also very into Tears for Fears, Depeche Mode, Queen, Skid Row, The Cure, INXS… there’s definitely more I can’t think of off the top of my head.
See, here’s my predicament— when it comes to 80’s stuff, there’s a lot of artists I love like a handful of songs from but don’t necessarily listen to their whole catalogue regularly per se because hair bands that had just a couple big hits were a huge thing and a dime a dozen, y’know? I think out of the music I really intensely listen to whole artists’ catalogues my tastes skew more 90’s. Make sense? But the 80’s aesthetics have my heart still lol
do you have any voiceclaims / people you think your ocs would sound like? musicians or otherwise
Most of my characters have voiceclaims actually, I think at some point I’m going to post a little video to Twitter with their faces and audio clips of each one’s canon voice or whatever closest matches their voice in my head.
Off the bat since they’re my two most known characters currently, I can tell you Jesse sounds very similar to Heath Ledger, and Nico sounds very close to Eddie Munson from Stranger Things (aka Joseph Quinn but with an American accent)
Are any of your ocs left handed and have to use a left handed guitar (or restring an upside down right handed guitar like Jimi Hendrix)? (Or any other hand specific instrument)
Oh good question! I’ve actually been thinking about this recently— he isn’t a character I’ve discussed much yet (though I will soon), but my guy Donnie is a lefty— whether he plays an upside down modified one or has a special lefty guitar I’m not fully decided on, but I feel like the modified restrung option would probably be most accurate for him and his mad-science sort of approach to making music in general
Do you have heights in mind for your band ocs?
I do indeed!
For my main 80’s band Dead Celebrities:
Jesse, the guitarist, is roughly 5’10-5’11
Donnie, the rhythm guitarist, is a tall beanpole at around 6’2-6’3
Wiley, the bassist, is also like 5’9-5’10ish
Eddie, their drummer, is the shortest— he stands at only around 5’5’-5’6 or so.
For my other characters outside of that story:
Nico is like 5’9 as well
Pink is about 6’0
Do you prefer to watch movies or read books?
I don’t usually like reading novel length fiction books very much because my visual imagination is complete and utter ass, although I make exceptions for nonfiction and biographies.
I prefer movies I think, but I often have to do something with my hands like a craft or drawing while I watch unless the movie really engrosses me for whatever reason
