It's definitively canon (Don't tell the normal folks). They exist on a sort of sliding timeline, and all the weight gain stuff is generally in their future, rather than the present. I like to think their personal journey together more or less ends with them becoming the fattest humans to have ever lived, constantly attempting (and succeeding) to break their own records together.
