What’s the current look of physical merch being developed? 👀
Super cute!! Our creators have amazing creations in progress and we can't wait to share them! Keep an eye out for when we're closer to preorders for some fantastic previews 👀
Honestly, I'd love to see more like... digital projects with an optional pay for production physical option? I get wanting to keep small for the sake of covering costs and compensation for contributors, but when it comes to charity zines, particularly, as a contributor I've always been willing to pay for my book, especially when it comes to charities that I really want to support. I too, am bummed that the project is SO small for something that's an anniversary project, but I understand how hard it was to make the decision.
In the future, though, perhaps consider a PfP model? The zine itself is digital, and then anyone who wants a physical copy (including contribs) pays the prod and shipping cost on TOP of the donation? That way you could get more contributors into the project, and folks wouldn't be so sad about such a small zine. I'd rather a large digital zine than a really tiny physical zine, personally.
These are just my thoughts as a contributor, consumer, and even an occasional mod, brought on by the others who have voiced their sadness.
Hello,
We do hear you! Our project is dedicated to supporting Palestine, which a P4P model doesn't allow for in a physical zine. Additionally, our mod team has limited availability & scaled the project to what we could effectively handle. Our team did consider all possible options and chose what was best for our mods' vision and availability.
If anyone else is interested in moderating a Kiki project, we would love to see it happen. Feel free to start your own project, with the specs that make the most sense for you! We'd be happy to cross-promote as well.
If you're interested in directly supporting Palestine, feel free to donate! More information on how our project is supporting Palestine can be found here (x). Here's a link to our donation form (x) directly.
Please note that as we have addressed this concern multiple times and have been clear about the expected scope in our Info Doc (x) since project launch, we will no longer be responding to questions about the scale of our project.
Sorry if I missed it, but who is the head mod for this project?
You haven't missed a thing! This project is the result of our collective efforts. Instead of designating a head mod position, we have decided to credit our mods by the active roles they will be performing. You can find those roles listed on our carrd!
Wow, sounds like you had a lot of interest! Would you consider expanding the zine? Or is there a reason you wanted to keep it so small?
Hello,
We are absolutely blown away by the interest in our project! Thank you so much for all your support.
Our project was scaled to meet the time availability of our mods and per the IC results—our goal is to fully compensate our contributors, pending sales. We chose to keep the project small so we could meet that goal within our projected sales.
While we have received an incredible outpouring of interest in contributing, this interest is not guaranteed to carry over into sales. As a result we have decided not to expand the project. We would love for you to get involved by supporting our Palestinian relief movement though—check out more information on that here (x)!
As a consumer of the zine, I'm pretty bummed to see so few contributors for an anniversary project, especially writers. Only three? That's so few, especially when the list is already small. Is there a reason you decided for such a small project, and why so few writers? I love art, don't get me wrong, but when it comes to these older fandoms, fanfiction has way more of my attention. For the 35th anniversary, it would have been nice to see more folks included.
Hello,
Thanks for reaching out—we definitely hear you! Our project is a love letter to one of our favorite fandoms & we wish we could've accepted all ~350 applicants.
Our project has been scaled since the beginning to be both manageable in workload for our mod team & capable of breaking even with full compensation for our contributors. We considered IC data and sales trajectories of recent Ghibli projects when determining the scope of the project, the number of contributors to accept, and other specs before launching apps.
Our info doc (x) has always been clear about the number of contributors we planned to accept, with a breakdown by role as well. In this case we opted to keep the contributor count low to ensure that writers had plenty of pages for their work without exceeding our planned budget. In fact, we expect to have more than half of the book focus on text!
Trust us when we say that this was a tough decision to make. If money and time weren't factors for this hobby project, we guarantee everyone would be in our server right now. Since they are, though, we put a lot of time and thought into this decision. We hope you understand!
how did you compare portfolios that were ghibli orientated vs non-ghibli orientated?
Hello,
Per our application guidelines, Studio Ghibli samples were highly encouraged but not required. We did not dock points for lack of a Studio Ghibli sample, nor did we prefer applicants who did include a Studio Ghibli sample.
Hi! Would you mind sharing how many writer applications you received and how many you accepted?
We receive 24 applications & accepted 3 writers!
We also 14 of our 177 Page Art applications, 4 of our 87 Merch Art applications, 3 of our 49 Spot Art applications, and 3 of our 9 Other Creatives applications :] Thank you all SO much for your support! We wish we could've accepted all ~350 of you...
Were pinch hitters notified that they were picked as pinch hitters?
Yes! Pinch hitters were notified in their email that they have been selected as a pinch hitter. They may be contacted anytime between now & January 5th, 2025 to work on any role they applied for & agreed to pinch hit for per their application.
If you haven't received an email or aren't sure if you were selected as a pinch hitter, please reach out via email or socials—we'd be happy to confirm for you!
Hello! Can writers asked for general portfolio feedback? If not, that's fine, i just figured I'd ask!
Hello,
Please reach out via email or social media DMs with your feedback request! While we can't guarantee our mod team's availability to respond to every request for feedback, we're happy to provide it as long as we have the availability.
In addition, we recommend a general zine Discord server, such as Mod Network or Zine Town. These servers often have portfolio help channels where you can get focused feedback on your work or ask questions about curating your portfolio.
We hope this helps & look forward to hearing from you!
Does the rejection email mean you were rejected from all application spots?
Hello,
Yes, our emails were sent such that all contributors only received one email (either an acceptance to a specific position, or a rejection from all positions). Thank you so much for applying—we wish we could have accepted everyone!
Hello, the application forms aren't accepting responses. Please reopen them, I have not submitted my application yet. I will need a few more days.
Hello! Thank you for your interest—our applications are closed at this time & will not be reopening.
Hello! For as long as the form is submitter, it's counted as a part of the applications to be reviewed? Sorry the timezones are so different and I think I passed past the said time only by a few minutes but the forms fortunately still accepted responses >< I hope it's okay! Thank you~~
Yes, they will be counted as long as the form is submitted! We left them open for a little longer as we understand this happens—time zones are confusing so we're glad your delivery made it here safely!
For the merch artist applications, would putting a catalogue of items be allowed to submit as 1 sample? It's basically compiled since I have a shop opening with the said items which could be suitable as a merch art sample ><
Thanks for asking! That sounds more suitable for a portfolio—we recommend choosing just 1 piece per sample. Hurry now, our delivery window closes TONIGHT!
aaaaAAAA WHAT IF I DNOT MAKE IT ON TIME FOR APPLICATOINSG
You've still got one more day! Fly fast & get your application in by tonight, 11:59PM EST!
If you miss the deadline, remember that you can still support our project and Palestinians by purchasing the zine or donating via our community copy project 💜
We look forward to your application!
Hello! What time + timezone exactly would the application forms be closed?
We'll be closing applications around 11:59pm EST! So please be sure to send in before the clock strikes midnight <3
