Chris's brand of vampirism (maybe she's a dhampir/half-vampire? Haven't fully thought it out yet,) makes the consumption of blood entirely supplemental. It's much, MUCH more nourishing than regular food for her (one of the reasons it accelerates her growth so much in comparison,) but is ultimately not necessary for survival.
