Well if we go by my lore: a funeral assistant goes to an elderly couples house to bring the husband to our facility, the widow gives a charm which brings another self out who gives the power to see spirits and other beings, with ones work becomes to go to so called haunted houses to defeat the beings with a lot of backstories on how they died (mix of ghostwire and fatal frame!)
