Hi! I'm Pete. I like games and anime, and I run Rice Digital and Retrounite.
512
It's threepwood007! I used to contribute to GamesareEvil while you were heading it up! Your new site is awesome!
For a question: Play any of the Legend of Heroes games?
Wow, not checked in here for a while, apologies for the delayed response! Hello! How are you? And yes I have, albeit only the first Trails in the Sky. I have them all though, I just need to make some (a lot of) time for them, as I'd like to write about them :)
Have you ever been to the United Kingdom?
I live there!
What is your favourite programming language?
STOS Basic.
Do your friends know much about your hobbies?
Online friends, yes. In real life, I try to get their interest -- particularly as some of them very obviously need distractions from stressful jobs and family life (several of them are new parents) -- but am not always particularly successful, despite me having posted a wealth of information on the things I'm into now. They certainly know "what" I'm into though.
Have you ever been to Japan?
Nope! I'd love to, though. I've developed such an interest in various aspects of Japanese culture through the popular entertainment I enjoy engaging with that I feel it would be fascinating to see it in the flesh. It would also be a good excuse to pull my finger out and get on with some decent study of the language.
Ever wanted to cover anime the same way you do videogames? If not its due to the amount of work or not being that big of a anime fan?
I love anime but I don't find nearly as much time as I'd like to 1) watch and 2) write about it! If I can find time to, I'd definitely like to incorporate some anime reviews, though. If nothing else it's another branch of things I can write about when I don't have a specific topic in mind for a day... and given the nature of the rest of my site there's no pressure to be up to date with seasonal stuff, either. Definitely something I've been considering, and I will consider it a lot harder if people express an interest in hearing what I have to say on the subject!
Xenosaga or Xenogears?
I haven't played Xenosaga yet, to my shame, so it has to be Xenogears by default at present. I do own all three Xenosagas, however, so I reserve the right to change my answer in the future... particularly if Bamco ever gives us that HD collection everyone wants...
can i see you naked
If you know where to look and when.
What is your favorite RPG?
That's a toughie, because I like different ones for different reasons. So I'll give two. In narrative terms, I'd say the Ar Tonelico series is an all-time favourite -- if I have to pick one, I'd say the second game. Mechanically, meanwhile, I think Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is going to take some beating.
Favourite video game soundtracks ever?
After beating Blue Reflection last night, that's actually shot right up there. Anything by Gust or Falcom is good by me, with Nights of Azure, the Ar Tonelico series and Ys Origin being the ones that spring most readily to mind.
Why is her name "Midori" even though she has red hair? 🤔
She's named after a Japanese teacher I had a few years back. She has green eyes, if that makes you feel better! :)
What do you think of this Twitter account? https://twitter.com/AmanesHead?s=09
I prefer Amane in her entirety.
Hi, Pete!
Any podcasts you'd recommend? What are your favorites?
I haven't listened to a podcast for literally years now. I used to enjoy 1up Yours back in the day, not just for the family connection. Some friends I used to cast with also have a show called Too Old For This which will appeal to gentlemen over a certain age. And don't tell anyone, but a friend and I will be experimenting with a possible podcast of our very own this weekend. Watch this space!
What video game girl do you love so much to the point where you want to make her your dearest waifu?
Nepgear Nepgear Nepgear! Honorable mention to Amane from Grisaia, but Nepgear will always be my one true waifu.
What are your favourite romance games (as in, characters having actual relationships in-game and not being just implied or ending the game as soon as they a couple gets together)?
Nights of Azure is definitely up there, as that presents a believable, subtly handled romance between the two heroines that isn't the main point of the game, but supports its overall atmosphere.
The visual novel Ne no Kami that I covered last year is also a nice example of something similar. It's a yuri visual novel where the romantic aspect again isn't necessarily the main point, it's just another piece of the whole picture.
Plus I've gotta mention Grisaia. The relationships in that game are varied, fascinating and incredibly compelling to witness. The series will always be the benchmark for me on how to integrate sexual content with narrative, too.
