TLDR: Grandpa Crossbell (Ibuki) he's an abusive, elitist, misogynistic asshole.
He didn't care about his children because he felt they didn't have potential to take over as the head of the Crossbell family. Kingston's mom (yuzuki) in particular was singled out and looked down on bc she didn't have the ability to see ghosts like the rest of the Crossbell family. Yuzuki left Johto and it was only when Kingston was born that Ibuki decided to bring them back (aka harass them to come back) and raise Kingston as his successor bc he had VERY strong abilities to see/interact with ghosts like his Grandpa. Basically Ibuki doesn't care about anyone unless he can use them and he thinks that some people are just Better Than Others.

this is an extremely shortened version but Ibuki did a lot of other SHADY shit like sending his brother away to the military and trying to get rid of him because he felt threatened. Ibuki also later tried to get rid of any records about said brother.
