Because the triplet oxygen has more unpaired electrons. The triplet state has three unpaired electrons, while the singlet state only has one unpaired electron. The triplet is in a lower energy state.

The one I was born in: they actually have grape flavored Fantas in stock at the store that was under the apartment complex we lived in.
