Suna and Thancred met just after the calamity when the scions were first formed. Suna had recently broken up with her last girlfriend and was having a rough time, so Minfilia (her closest friend) figured joining the scions would be a good distraction for her.

Suna’s first impression of Thancred definitely wasn’t a romantic one- she didn’t even think he was particularly handsome. He was just a co worker, and nothing more really. She didn’t start to develop feelings for him until seeing his more vulnerable side.

Thancred’s first impression of Suna was that she was beautiful, and awfully shy. Had she been any other girl he probably would have flirted with her, as he was wont to do at the time, but she was always sort of off limits to him as a close friend of Minfilia’s, so he dismissed any of those thoughts pretty quickly.
