Yes exactly! Its an exchange of fics. You won't write for the same person who wrote for you, but you will both receive and write a fic.
There is an option to become a "pinch hit" participant. These are writers who don't make a commitment to the exchange, (though they can be a normal participant) but will be able to write a work in a small time frame for a participant if there are any drop outs. These may write a fic and not receive one specific to them.
There's no option to receive a gift without writing one as well. That's what a normal fest is for~

Hi mod! I was wondering how the gift exchange works? You gift a work to another on AO3 I believe but do you decide the prompt? Does the person your gifting it too decide the prompt? I wanna participate but I don't know what's it like
Hello! So basically, the participants will submit their favorite ships and tropes to read as well as stuff they wouldn't want to read. Then you submit a list of things that you are great at writing and would love to write about as well as things you refuse to write for or about. Then mod pairs you off according to your likes and dislikes!
Though there are not specific prompts submitted, there is a special box for requestees to submit a few scenarios or ideas they may have. These are not required to be written by the writer if they don't choose to, as long as some of your other likes are written.

Hi I think a high pressure event like a gift exchange isn't a very good idea considering the amount of other events we have going on. But think about doing what anon suggested in skzwriters cc. Make a list of stayters and their reading preferences and leave that list for writers to browse and gift fics to people whenever they want
Yes, I didn't think a gift exchange would be a good idea right now either. I just wanted to see if others really wanted it. However! I had the same idea this morning without even reading their cc so we will work on something!

We're glad you're as excited as us! We just don't want to overwhelm anyone with the many events going on right now :) We're looking forward to starting our events in November!
