Artemis woke to visions of battle again. Astra’s bunk creaked below her. The claws and teeth of beasts had torn through her fellow soldiers, leaving them-

Never once had Artemis seen Draconis, the newly elevated captain, look scared. Not until that day. Their first battle. She tossed and turned in her bunk, a decision forming in her mind. Though vague at first, her resolve solidified, and she knew what she had to do.
Slowly, carefully, not wanting to wake anyone else, Artemis worked her way to the floor. The barracks had never looked so empty. Not all of them were dead - some, like Jerry, were wounded, sent home to recover and decide whether or not they could return.
Artemis almost wished she were one of those. It would have been an easy excuse, not like the conversation she was about to have.
Draconis was in their sister’s office, though Artemis supposed it was theirs now. Their fingers were pressed to their temples, their ears back. A sheet of paper lay in front of them on the desk, a list of names scrawled on it, split into three sections. One was for the soldiers who were now recovering, but wounded, their locations alongside it. One was for those who’d been found deceased. The last was for those who hadn’t been found. A second list sat beside the first next to a stack of unopened letters.
Artemis pushed the door open, and the captain looked up to them. “Dame Shire. Good…” They glanced out the office’s narrow window. “Morning?”
“Good morning, Captain.” An oil lamp flickered on the desk, dangerously close to the papers. “I… I have something I need to talk to you about.”
Draconis looked up expectantly, but didn’t say anything.
Artemis took a deep breath. Then another. “I don’t think I can continue to serve as a member of the FENCE.”
Draconis took a moment to respond. “I understand.” Then they turned back to the lists in front of them, penning Artemis’s name under the list of those who were alive and accounted for.
A surge of guilt welled up in her, seeing her name on that list. “Can I… help you with anything?”
“No. Not without retaining your status as a guard.” Draconis groaned. “I was thinking about going through the approval process to get a position added to help with this.” They waved at the stacks in front of them. “I don’t know how Celbalrai managed it all.”
“I’ll… think about it, when you’re ready.”
“I understand if you can’t return at all. But… we’ll miss you, okay?”
Artemis choked back a sob. “Okay.”
She wanted to say more, but she turned on her heel and left, not to return to the barracks, but to leave the complex entirely, for what she expected would be the last time. Even her belongings were now tainted with the memories of battle, and she felt it better to leave it all behind.

not at all too personal! I'm big on making sure people know dog breeds and make sure they know what's a good fit for them

as far as service dogs go, poodles actually are pretty popular in America among newer programs, for profit programs, and owner trainers! poodles were bred for similar purposes to the much more traditional service breeds, Labrador and golden retrievers, and therefore well bred poodles have the same traits that make a good service dog - a love of people, ease of training and eagerness to please, and confidence around unpredictable situations. for me I chose a poodle over a lab or golden mainly because my brother has a dog allergy that's most upset by oily coats like you find on the other breeds, and also because poodles tend be less prone to both hip dysplasia and cancer than the other breeds

that first part is honestly kinda difficult because the breeds people think of as good house pets are thought of first for a reason. what i WILL say on this is if you think you want a doodle for good housepet qualities, you actually want a poodle. there's also some more obscure retriever and companion breeds that won't be bad choices

as far as dogs people seem to think are good house pets that aren't, i'm just going to throw out breeds the internet has made a wreck of people's understanding of what they are
corgi - generally not a terrible choice, HOWEVER. they were bred to herd sheep by nipping at their heels. you want a corgi, you need to be ready to train this out of them and give them an outlet for herding behaviors and herding breed intelligence.
shiba inu - well, they have origins as hunting dogs and a pretty strong tendency to alert bark. again if you do your research and can deal with it, go for it. they're just... not what the internet made them out to be. like at all.
borzoi - please do not keep this sighthound bred to hunt and kill wolves in packs as a house pet and expect it to be a golden retriever of a dog in any capacity. they're sighthounds, they don't train so easily, they have a deep desire to chase anything that will run from it, and they were bred to work.

also re: family friendly, never leave any dog regardless of breed unattended with young children and teach your kids about boundaries and dog body language
