hi there, were rejected applicants also sent emails? i am checking my email but i have nothing in my inbox or in junk, so i'm just wondering if this means there was an issue with my email, or if it just means i wasn't selected. thank you! :)
All applicants should have received an email! Please check all of your inboxes— they may be sent to spam, or be delayed due to mass recipients. If you still have issues, please message or email us privately!
Hi! I've been looking forward to this project and I wanted to apply as a writer but I had a few questions. I was wondering if you could talk more about the portfolio requirement and specifically why you're not allowing ao3 links? Every other zine I've seen that asks for a portfolio allowed writers to use their ao3 accounts, so I was wondering why that wouldn't work here? Are ao3 links allowed to individual fics for the 3 samples? Also, I was wondering how you decided on the 10 writer limit? I understand that fic typically takes up more page space than art, but since this is a digital-only zine I thought that wouldn't have been an issue. Does the ratio of artists to writers reflect the results of the interest check? Thank you!
AO3 portfolios are often commonplace in the zine community! But while writers are free to submit links to individual works on AO3 as samples, we ask that they not use their AO3 account as a portfolio for the same reason we ask an artist not to use, for example, their Instagram: the amount of content. While definitely not applicable to everyone, we must assume that a writer's account likely includes a significant amount of works, not all of which will put your best foot forward to demonstrate the skills and meet the requirements we're looking for in the zine. We must also add that these evaluations, especially writer evaluations, simply take time. Our mod team is only human, and only has a limited time within their own and the project's schedules to review everyone's work and publish results in a timely manner.
We want to offer everyone a fair look at their work, and our mod team a fair opportunity to do so. Therefore, for the benefit of everyone involved, we ask that all our writer applicants curate portfolios of five or more personally selected works— which may be as simple as a shared folder of documents. As long as they fulfill what we're looking for, and succinctly show off all the skills you desire!
As for our writer spots— While this number may seem small in comparison to the available page artist spots, we must reiterate that ten is a significant amount of people! And of course, being writers, it's only natural for these contributors to take up a higher amount of pages per work than an illustration. We may be a digital zine with no page count to budget for, but we must still consider the balance of illustrated work to written work when formatting, particularly with our word count permitting slightly longer than potentially standard works. Four to five artists per one writer is often the ratio one will see in zines, and one we feel most comfortable in.
And while we do intend to welcome in a large amount of contributors, scope is still a concern we must prepare for. We would love to accept every writer, as we would love to accept every applicant, but this is simply not feasible for our mod team. And for our writing mod working with all of our writers to produce the best work they can, simply not feasible for them especially. Again, we're only human! So we hope you can understand these decisions, and to all our writers, we wish you the best of luck!
Hi, for comic artist apps do you want comic samples? Should they be AA comics or is other media fine?
Comic samples are encouraged, but not required! The same applies to those samples being from Ace Attorney. We will not be assigning page artists to single pages, spreads, or comics at this time, but if you have it, we'd love to see!
Hi! Does the application form email applicants a copy after submitting? Thanks
Our mod applications do not. If you feel that any information provided may be incorrect or outdated, you're welcome to resubmit at any point before the deadline. We will grade your most recent application.
Would you be willing to disclose how you evaluate mod applications? Thank you <3
What the team is looking for in these applications will vary depending on their role. However, we expect all applicants to appear cooperative and reliable to work with. This is where prior experience in any kind of project would be helpful, but for our interns, not required. We also expect an air of professionalism; this may not be a suit and tie event, but general correct spelling and grammar, clear answers with detailed and relevant information, and enthusiasm about the project shows that you're presenting yourself at your best.
For our formatting applicants, we specifically look for previous experience in formatting zines, as these can have different demands than other works. Do your samples demonstrate a knowledge of graphic design, and employ visual aesthetics adapted to suit the project? Perhaps you have experience in visual arts to supplement your graphic design style? It's certainly not required, but tell us anything that can strengthen your skills!
Intern applicants on the other hand, we expect to show a widespread and general set of skills, dependent on the areas you're interested in working under. For social media: do you have knowledge of the social media platforms we use for the zine? If you intend to work in art or writing, we review your work for the foundational knowledge of said areas to offer appropriate and constructive feedback. And again, while we require no prior mod or zine experience of our applicants, anything that might lend to project management, critique, or any other areas that suit your fancy, we're more than happy to hear about!
Hello! If one were to be accepted to be a mod for the zine, would they still be able to apply to be a contributor as well?
If a mod would like to create for the zine on top of their team responsibilities, they're free to however they wish— No application needed! We'd like to maintain as many spots as possible for our contributor applicants.
what are you looking for in a mod intern for this specific project?
General tasks, including reviewing applications, managing the server, answering questions, and managing contributors. They'll learn how the zine is organized and marketed, and to give constructive feedback according to zine guidelines. An intern may be expected to temporarily fill in for an unavailable mod's responsibilities, if possible with their existing expertise, but no previous experience in zines of any kind is required.
For writing samples, can we submit excerpts from pieces that contain NSFW content as long as the excerpts themselves are not NSFW?
Yes, so long as you can guarantee your samples are entirely SFW and absolutely do not link to any NSFW content in either samples or portfolio.
I'm gonna be 16 in 21 days, can i apply?
As long as applicants are 16 years or older by the time contributor applications conclude, they're more than welcome to apply!
can people under 18 apply to be artists?
Contributors need only be 16 or older to apply! Only moderator applicants are required to be adults.
hello, hello! what an amazing idea for a zine! i noticed that there wasn't a formatting mod listed, and was wondering if you were looking for one? thank you!
Why, thank you, the team is so happy you're excited! And that's correct! As stated below, starting July 20th, we'll be opening applications for a formatting mod, as well as a general mod intern to join the team!
what mod roles will you be looking for?
Starting July 20th, we'll be opening applications for a formatting mod, as well as a general mod intern to join the team!
Are DGS characters allowed?
Yes, they are! We're encouraging a wide spread of characters from all entries to Ace Attorney: from Investigations, to The Great Ace Attorney, even Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright, if you'd like!
