do you think you should write and post shit fics that aren't very good? or just work on writing until your fics look good? bllk feels like a place where the fans are a little harsh towards creators and it makes me wonder should i post my shit fics or wait till my writing is less awful
Okay I really like this question so im going to yap a bit. if any of my writer friends want to give their two cents pls feel free to reply. In my opinion, id say that you shouldnt post shit fics. When you post you should be posting mainly for yourself first. A person who has themselves in mind won’t post knowing the content is not consumable. Not to mention, posting not good content just has a certain air of desperation to it imo. Like you were so hungry for public approval that you couldn’t wait to better your craft before sharing it. Unless youre posting with the sole intention of getting constructive criticism from people, idk why you would.
However, I will go back to your second question and make a little distinction. I think an aspiring writer can share their work once it’s /palatable/ and not necessarily /good/. and I say so is because, to me, good writing is a subjective and unfeasible thing whereas palatable writing is objective and feasible.
A work that is palatable is simply work that is consumable. It has proper grammar and punctuation, it has a good plot and plot progression. It gets a point across. Most people just stop here and while that’s just fine, I think its soulless and Its usually noticeable. If you dont gaf about that then by all means fee free to stop here.
When it comes to good writing, however, it’s a whole different ballpark. The reason why I said good writing is subjective is because the thing that sets it aside from just being palatable is style. and the enjoyment of a style is completely dependant on the person consuming it. a writers style shines through the work (as pretentious as that may sound) and thats what reaches the reader. Liking a story isn’t really just liking the plot or the characters, it’s liking how the writer writes all those things. have you ever seen a story with a plot that sounded like you’d love it but you ended up hating it? that is because you didnt like the writer’s style. Some styles are more accepted than others but personal style is the one thing an author should focus on when trying to have a good story. Some readers will like a style and some won’t and that’s okay because the one reader your style should focus on pleasing is yourself.
Remember though, you can’t perfect style and a story you consider good today might not be as good the next day. i have older work that people love and I dont care about and I have newer work that I adore but people dont care for. Thats okay. Even for years to come there will always be something you see that you can improve or change about your writing to make you happy. You can’t escape that as a human being because human beings grow and change everyday. So dont worry on perfecting your style and focus on making the you of that time satisfied. In other words have fun.
To conclude, “shit” writing as you say doesn’t have any business being posted at all. A person is free to post once their writing is palatable but they should work on achieving good writing. The journey to achieving “good” writing is never ending so prepare to be here forever. finally, please remember that you are often your own biggest enemy! Dont conclude something is “shit” without a second opinion.
