I hate when a fav piece of media gets so misinterpreted that people don't watch it due to that reason yes I am talking about monster because I was so shocked when I watched it it is so much more than it having a great antagonist like why didn't no one tell me a good chunk of monster is about racism yet everyone boils it down to Johan evil
i think w/ titles like monster & honestly most art what happens is that the characters become vessels for the series's iconicity in fandom space — more so than other elements like setting or plot beats. it's interesting to think about, but does come at the cost of being somewhat reductive both in terms of what's known about said media and what the discussion ends up being about. although it's understandable, since characters are what most naturally reflects into a reader.
