Hi. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how long do you think it'll take for feedback for the applications to be sent?
Hello, we are currently rounding up all requests for feedbacks and be reviewing them shortly!
Would interrogation room scenes be counted as NSFW?
Unless much more extreme circumstances occur within the scene than what happens within canon, you do not need to mark it as NSFW.
Can i apply for the zine using a finished piece from another zine?
Yes, you may.
Is there a threshold for what is considered/needs to be marked nsfw for submissions?
If your sample contains explicit sexual content, explicit gore, or extreme duress, please mark these as NSFW. If you are still unsure, please feel free to DM us!
would a published fic of 3.5k be really pushing the line for an example? It's the only one I'd have to be able to use to apply otherwise I'd have to write a whole new fic and I was just wondering if there was any sort of leeway for example purposes.
Yes, you may use this for a sample piece
Hello! If we've posted our writing pieces on AO3, would you like us to include our tags in our sample documents other than listing potential triggers (which I see is its own field on the form?) Thank you!
You can do this, but it's not required to do so outside the form :)
Hi, this is my first time signing up for a zine 😄
When can we expect to find out if we got in? I'm guessing April after the applications close?
Emails will be sent out around April 3rd or 4th letting applicants know if you have been accepted or rejected.
What about the genre for the submissions? Is heavy angst okay?
Heavy angst is a-okay 👍
Just for clarification sake: writers CAN use excerpts from ONLY published works be it longform fic or oneshot to fit the word limit requirement of the applications? Or can we also submit excerpts of wip fics if they happen to be longer than the word limit but are not yet published?
As long as the excerpt itself you choose is completed, you can submit a WIP or otherwise unpublished fic for your portfolio samples.
are you guys no longer answering these?
We are answering all questions that are not answered in the FAQ form. Some answers may not be cross-posted.
Heya, just a little FYI since this part of fandom history often gets erased, but you mention “mini traditional zines” to refer to DIY zines for potential merch. In fact, “traditional” zines were actually fandom zines! The first zine to use that term was for the sci-fi fandom back in the 40s. DIY/handmade zines didn’t come onto the scene until much later when photocopying became accessible, and these creators co-opted the term “zine” to refer to their projects. Just a suggestion, but perhaps you could change the word “traditional” to avoid confusion/fandom history erasure? :)
Your enthusiasm for fandom history is wonderful! However, "traditional" means what was common for an extended period of time, not how something was originally done, so we don't agree that calling home-printable zines "traditional" to distinguish them from professionally bound anthologies erases any history.
Hello mods! About writers and submitting published works: is it okay to cut parts of a fic to fit the word count and submit the "new" version?
Yes, this is OK to do!
So is it at most three samples or that more than three are encouraged? I'm confused by the wording on the document
All portfolios are required to have at minimum three samples to be considered during applications. More samples are encouraged, but not required.
Are you going to be limiting the amount of times a character can be used? Like, if there are multiple people wanting to do villain Joker, would only a few people get to do him?
Outside of Black Mask Crow pitches, we won't be limiting characters per say, however we will be asking that if you don't have a dedicated AU that you wish to apply with, that you have a few characters you wouldn't mind creating a piece for. We will be trying to have at minimum one piece for each character!
i wanted to ask, will having fewer followers and/or less of a portfolio hurt my chances of getting into this zine?
Your follower count/the size of your portfolio outside our required 3 samples will not have an affect on your application! Outside of the head mod who will be censoring all apps of identification, mods will be grading blindly based on skill, not popularity.
