I've seen quite a few theories regarding Rikki's parents and why they're seemingly non-existant. do you subscribe to any theory in particular?
for me them being some level of abusive/negligent is so patently clear to me that i forget it isn’t actually canon orz. regardless, i think throughout taki’s childhood that she, her thoughts, and her feelings were often overlooked ignored and disregarded especially when compared to maki (though i imagine that the golden child upbringing that i HC for maki did not do her any favors either); someone does not feel as worthless about themself as she does (esp at her age) if they have living and affirming parents. i don’t want to speculate on any darker specifics in fear of seeming sensationalizing, but as others have pointed out, her quickness to anger and physical aggression are very concerning to me in terms of what she might have seen/experienced :/
that isn’t really answering your question, so to do so more properly: i don’t think they’re dead or anything, at least not both of them; for reasons i can’t fully articulate, i do feel like she is actively/currently experiencing this kind of familial marginalization. i do think they are very emotionally and/or physically distant (at least one of them), and their divestment from her life one way or another is reflected on how they are a non-presence in her life. but i’m not certain on many if any of the details. whatever the case may be, i think family life has been a very painful space for taki, it breaks my heart :(
