What would you think would have happened if x86 didn't take off, and instead something like 6502 or z80 is used mainstream in desktop PCs

I mean the BBC Micro used the 6502 but if in the case of the 8088 wasn't selected for the IBM PC, both the Motorola 68000 and Zilog Z800 would have made the IBM PC too pricey and enter the market too late. The 6502 and Z80 are only 8-bit wide.
