Were you able to start your career as a freelance translator in the US? Or did you have prior experience in-house at a company in Japan?

I've always been fully remote in the US. I got my start with a mix of piecework gigs on proz and friend referrals, which is why when offering advice in this field, I always emphasize the importance of networking. Agencies and publishers won't help you with that.
