are you aware of the second dungeon meshi zine that is being created?
Yes, we are aware! Our teams have been in touch since February 26th, and have committed to remain in contact with one another through until leftovers for both projects.
what time on feb. 9th will contributor application results be announced?
Hello! All contributor results have been sent out at this time!
Hello! May i know what timezone does the schedule dates follow?
Hello, the schedule dates follow EST!
I was wondering what the ratio of applicants for each role were? Basically how many people applied to be chefs, artists, and writers.
Applicant totals leaned towards artists - as is typical for most zines - but we received an abundance of applications for each position. We're excited to review each application and reveal our final lineup when the time comes!
Hi! would it be fine to resubmit a new app if editing the original isn't an option atm? Thank you!
Yes, please feel free to resubmit an app! Thanks for your interest in our zine!
Hello! How detailed do the recipes have to be? Both for applying and for the zine itself. I understand obviously the cooking/baking steps should be clear and concise, but things like how many calories a dish is or number of servings or exact measurements for seasonings where it ends up mostly to taste, are those all expected to be listed with set numbers as well? I don't have any of my recipes written down, I memorized them and slightly alter things based on what ingredients I have on hand, so I'm trying to gauge how much detail I need for writing them up to apply. Thank you!
Hello! We will primarily be considering how reasonably replicable your recipe is, which means that certain details are more important than others. For example, the exact amount of sugar on a garnish may not need to be measured (e.g., "dust surface of creme brûlée with sugar until evenly coated"), but the exact ratio of sugar in a very technical desert may be non-negotiable.
As another example for savory recipes, salt and pepper "to taste" is reasonable, but ingredients that are less familiar to some readers (such as herbs, soy sauce, etc.) may benefit from further specificity.
As for detail in recipe steps, please use your best judgment! While there is no need to explain how to fold batter, if your recipe is, say, a meringue-based dessert, it may be helpful to clarify (e.g., "fold carefully, trying not to knock the air out").
Information like calories is not needed, but serving size, primary ingredient measurements, etc. are! It may be helpful to take a peek at sample recipes on reliable food sites online to help guide your level of specificity.
Thanks for your interest in applying, and we hope to see your application!
is it possible to extend the app deadlines?
Hello! Although we won't be extending the app deadline, we do hope to see your application! Thanks for your interest in our project!
Does it close tonight at 12am? Or technically right before February 3rd?
Apps will close right before February 3rd (i.e., Feb. 2nd 11:59PM EST/UTC-5)!
Hello! What time/timezone will apps be closing?
Apps will be closing at 11:59PM EST/UTC-5! Thanks for your interest in our project, and we look forward to receiving your application!
Hi there, is it okay if we have less than 10 pieces to show for contributor applications? I'm interested in applying, but I'm unsure if I have enough according to the guidelines.
Absolutely! 10 is the maximum we recommend for artist applications; only 3 are required.
Depending on the role(s) you'd like to apply for, we provide different suggestions for what to include as a part of your portfolio. We recommend curating your portfolio to meet these suggestions to be better weighed towards the role(s) indicated in your application! These can be aspects such as: character interactions, rendered food, composition, use of negative space, stylization/simplification, and so on. You can find that information within our info doc!
We look forward to receiving your application!
what if my portfolio has one or two risqué (but censored/hidden beyond the first slide) pieces amongst the rest? will I have to make a whole new portfolio for this zine application?
Thanks for your interest in applying!
Assuming you're using Google Slides, hidden slides by the file owner may not be hidden from our view depending on the link permissions you provide, as hidden slides are typically only skipped or hidden when in presentation mode. If you'd like to play it safe to follow our SFW application guidelines (as portfolios containing NSFW will be disregarded) the decision to create a new portfolio due to borderline/risqué pieces is up to you. Please use your best judgment and refer to canon as a guideline for what counts as SFW!
Is an anime-only fan qualified to participate in this project? I'm in love with the anime but have no prior knowledge about it, nor have I read the manga. Is it cool for me to jump in?
Absolutely! We welcome all fans of Dungeon Meshi! With the anime coming out, it's wonderful to find new fans of the series. Please note, however, that this zine is, in part, to celebrate the completion of the manga! The content of the zine may or will include details and calls to the recipes, characters, and events that take place in the latter part of the story. If you do not want any spoilers, we'd recommend caution when navigating the zine's resources and, should you be accepted, navigating the zine server.
Will chefs be assigned recipes to recreate? How will that be delegated or organized?
Hello! While chefs do have the ability to choose floors in their application, this is primarily to help the mods determine general interest and will not impact your recipe selections. During the pitch period, chef contributors will have the opportunity to pitch for their top 5 choices in recipes, which the mods will then sort through to find an ideal combination that would allow for as many chefs to have their top choices as possible while also maintaining a balance in recipes per floor. Thanks for your interest in our project!
hi! is it okay if i don't have any public/active social media when applying to be an artist?
Hello, the social media field is intended to give us an alternative method to contact you should our primary contact method fail. Please provide an account that you actively check, even if you don't actively post! If you do not have any public socials to act as a backup, or do not have your settings to allow for DMs, please make sure the email you provide is one you regularly check. Thanks for your interest in our project!
Hello! If one were to apply to be a chef, are mods looking to see more savory cooking dishes or would bakes and other desserts also be welcome in the application?
Both are welcome! While we do recommend having a balanced portfolio, it's perfectly acceptable for your application to lean one way or the other! Although dunmeshi does tend to lean more toward savory in terms of dishes that the series covers, it does include several sweet dishes, so as long as you showcase a sufficient technical foundation to be able to recreate a variety of the canon dishes (for example, having a portfolio of 3 variants of parfait recipes would NOT give much indication of overall skill), we more than welcome any sweets experts! We look forward to receiving your application!
