He had so much of his own childhood and his entire life ripped from him. It all feels distant and as if those experiences don't even belong to him. He's probably extremely anxious during pregnancy, thinking about the many possible horrible outcomes. But once he can grasp the child himself he will protect them with his entire life. It's not an ideal parent-child relationship but Michael's love, though often times veiled by terror, is pure and genuine.
