At what point do I know I haven't been accepted if I don't get an email?
We just sent out all application results emails! We apologize for the slight delay; we've been doing a lot behind the scenes to make sure everything's ready! Good luck and thanks so much for applying!!
hi, you mentioned that this is a non-profit zine, but does this include contributor compensation eg. getting a physical copy of the zine?
Hi! As of now, we can guarantee that all contributors will receive a digital copy of the zine and any digital merch produced. If sales permit, we plan on compensating contributors with the physical products with as little cost to them as possible. We deeply respect and appreciate those willing to contribute to the zine, so we hope to make that happen!
Are there spots open for art? If so, where do I apply? Thank you!
Hi! You sent this at the perfect time because our contributor applications close tomorrow!
You can apply through the Google Forms linked below ⬇️
Page Artist | Merch Artist | Writer
Hi, for the application, what's the difference between 'samples' and the portfolio? I'd like to have an idea of which examples of my art to list as samples, and which to leave in the portfolio.
Also, I'm applying for writing as well, so do my samples all have to be Gravity Falls related or can I put in a few short ones from other fandoms too if I feel they also demonstrate my writing style well?
Thank you ^^
Hi! Your three samples should be pieces you feel best capture your style and technical skill. Those are the pieces we will be looking at FIRST when evaluating applications. Your portfolio can include these pieces as well as anything else you would like us to see! Showcasing a variety of work in different styles and environments here will help round out your application.
For both art and writing samples, we ask that at least one of your pieces is Gravity Falls related so we can get a feel for how you depict the characters. However, you are more than welcome to include samples from other fandoms, especially if you believe they represent your best work.
This is my first time applying for a zine, but I don't have a portfolio. Do I need one? How do I make one? (I'm applying as a writer)
Hi! For writers, we are looking for 2-3 samples of work, so you don't need a portfolio to apply! There are slots to put each piece in the application. We recommend putting all of your pieces on separate Google Docs. For more details on the specifics of what we're looking for, please check out our Writer App Guidelines!
heya! I was wondering: would a link to a carrd.co for our portfolio be alright instead of a google doc? I'm used to carrd and get pretty nervous trying to setup a shiny new doc haha :)
Hi! We completely understand your situation. Up to this point, we have had several people use their Carrds or other portfolio sites in their applications and it shouldn't be a problem as long as it's easy to navigate!
Would you be able to add detailed alt text to all your images going forward? I was trying to read the interest check and other graphics and found it difficult to, and it would also be great for screen readers! Thanks!
Hi! So sorry for the delay on this response. Our social media mod began incorporating alt text to all our images last week! Thank you so much for your suggestion and please let us know if there is anything else we can do to improve accessibility across our content!
I think, at least for twitter, having a name more specific than "Seasons Zine" would help with disambiguation from other seasons zines, haha. I get trying to get around disney censors but y'all's Twitter bio says it's about the Pines family, so maybe a spin of that name? I just think a more specific name will help people find y'all easier :)
Thank you so much for your suggestion! Our social media mod recently updated our Twitter name so hopefully, more people will be able to find it!! 😊
Hiya! Sorry, I looked through the carrd and Twitter but I've been having trouble finding an answer - is the zine physical?
Hi! We're aiming to have physical and digital copies of the zine available! We will share more details at a later date.
hello! what are your expected numbers of contributors per position that you're looking to fill?
Hi! We're currently aiming to have 78 contributors in total: 13 page artists and 3 writers for each season, as well as 14 merch artists. Please note that this total will include both accepted applicants and guest contributors and that it can change depending on the number of applications we receive. Thanks for your question!
hi! I know this is late back during the interest check there was a section for recommending someone, that said you could recommend yourself? I didn't know what this meant so I just recommended myself without thinking about it. Sorry if that's not what I was supposed to do/if it's reserved for certain people and I hope this doesn't harm my contributor application. I guess my question is what that section meant?
No worries at all! Thanks for your question and for your interest in becoming a contributor! In addition to selecting contributors through applications, we will send guest invitations to certain creators in the fandom based on the recommendations sent through the interest check.
This was open to everyone, so you were more than welcome to nominate yourself! Many people did this, and it will not hurt your contributor application if you don't receive a guest invite.
hello! sorry if this is a dumb question, but i wanted to ask to be sure. does our piece for the zine need to be closer to the gravity falls art style or can it be in our own?
Not a dumb question at all, thank you for asking! Your piece would be in your own style, whatever that looks like! It does not have to be in the style of the show. (If you typically draw the characters in the show's style and consider that your art style, that's fine, too). The main requirement is that the piece is seasons themed.
What mods will you be looking for? I'd love to help. ^^
And do you have a tentative schedule in mind?
Hi there!
We currently have mods in the Head Mod, Social Media, Graphics, and Shipping positions.
I, the Head Mod, am also covering Finance but if someone with a lot of experience and a good reference from a past zine wanted to assist, I'd be happy to share the responsibility as it's always good to have multiple eyes on the finances.
We need a formatting mod (this one is really important as it's a BIG part of making the zine look good, although I have enough experience to format the zine if necessary), an organisation mod would be great, and a communications mod would also help.
Examples of their responsibilities below:
All Mods
-Actively participate in zine discussions
-Consistent communication with fellow mod team
-Support fellow mods as needed
-Help answer contributor questions related to your role(s)
Finances-
MUST be 20+ years old and have a reference from another zine/project due to recent issues with finance mods in other zines.
-Check over our current calculations for costs
-Assist in managing the finances (we have manufacturers and a budget plan but we could do with someone to keep an eye on this. As this is a non-profit zine, taxes are not a concern).
Organisation
-Keep track of the zine checklist (provided, although you can edit or add to it!) and schedule
-Make sure participants are handing in their Check-Ins and follow up with them if they do not
-Ensure other Mods are fulfilling their responsibilities. (And help them figure out a plan if they are struggling)!
Communications
- Keep an eye on emails and our Retrospring
-Ensure smooth conversation between buyers and mods
-Main point of contact between mods and participants
Formatting Mod (super important!!):
-Assemble the digital and physical zines according to the theme and manufacturer requirements, using the given fonts and artwork
-Needs experience with zine formatting and Adobe InDesign or an equivalent program
Additional optional responsibilities (to go with one of the above roles):
Art Feedback
-Give feedback (if requested) to artists after each check-in
-Needs a good understanding of anatomy, composition, etc
Writing Feedback
-Give feedback to writers (if requested) after each check-in
-Needs a good understanding of grammar.
Merch Feedback
-Give feedback to merch artists (if requested) after each check-in
-Needs a good understanding of formatting requirements
All mods will be given access to the Google Account and our Notion which has a beautiful calendar with all major events for their whole zine and then sections filtered by their roles listed in it.
I have written the schedule but I planned to release it after the interest check closed if we had enough interest.... Seeing as we've had over 120 responses to the check, however, I'd say it's probably alright for us to go ahead and publish it so I'll be putting that on our Carrd over the next few days.
I know that's a lot of information but I hope that helps!
Hi!! I'm interested in applying for the zine and had a couple questions:
1. Is there an estimate for when applications will be opening?
2. When applications open, will it be possible to pitch ideas for what we may contribute to the zine?
Hi there! Thank you for your questions! We plan to allow 2-3 weeks after the interest check closes to update our budget and hold additional mod applications and then contributor applications will open in early April after new mods have been accepted and briefed. Please make sure you have at least 1 example of the Gravity Falls characters in your art/writing style in your portfolio if you plan to apply! :)) An 'official' schedule will be posted sometime shortly after the interest check closes.
We plan to have a short 2-week pitching period at the start of the zine where everyone will submit 3 ideas for a piece they'd like to do for the zine and the mods will approve one. This is to make sure we have different ideas in the zine (not everyone drawing or writing about a snowball fight, for example) and also that we have a balance of pieces for each season.
You will also be given the opportunity to suggest your idea(s) in your application but nothing will be approved until the pitching period. Just in case anyone is stuck for ideas, we've got a long list of suggestions from our mods and interest check! :)
