hi!!! do u have any tips for improving your vocabulary/writing style for a writer whose native language isnt english? im polish, and i also know that you're polish, and your writing is so beautiful 😭
i hope u have a great day! ♡
hellooo!! honestly i've spoken a shit english before i started writing, so my trusted advice is to just write and write in english, which also means you have to start thinking in english. obviously, when you speak more than one language, you will know a word in one of them and not know it in the other, but thankfully we have the internet now so we can google stupid things, like when you forget what "przewijać się" is in english even though it's a collocation you use on a daily basis. there are also sites like onelook which finds you a word based on your description when you can't remember what it was. it gives you lots of synonyms too, though they can get stupid. that's for vocabulary. as for general advice, it's to read a lot, especially books in the style you think is most captivating. sure, you can read fanfics, too, and do that a lot!!! but when you read acclaimed books or just those you enjoy, you can think about all the *why*s and *how*s. what catches your eye when you read? is it heavier on the description or the dialogue? does it flow, or is it so boring it's taking you 5 minutes to read one sentence? why? make a note on your phone or somewhere where you'll write down all expressions and words that catch your attention while you're reading. you need to read actively, and think about the emotions you would like to evoke in your writing, because the second advice i have is to write. write a lot. short stories and long stories and beautiful stories and shitty stories. that's the only way to really develop your own style and find confidence. practice. that's what i've been doing, and if you enjoy my works, then it must be working, because. god. re-reading my fics from 2019 or 2021 even makes my skin CRAWL. they were so bad. and now i re-read my recent ones and i'm having fun, and i thought that had been the peak of my abilities. remember that you will only improve if you keep going, and there's only a point to it if you're having fun. the words will start coming to you naturally before you know it. i'm not sure how helpful this is, but either way i hope soooooo. lots of good luck with your writing!!!!!!!! have a lovely day mwah
