hiiii i wanted to ask abt the usage of gege. why is it such a big deal to use it? when i lives in chn i heard children call their older brothers gege's, so im a little confused. do close friends only use ge? bcause i also heard girls call older girls jiejie so idk anymore why hanbin calling hao gege would be recolutionary, even though i am wholly enjoying myself!♡ just want to understand :')
1 character repeated gives a connotation of the speaker being cute. like if i say 狗狗 instead of 狗 (dog) it’s like im saying “doggie”. yes, children do usually call their older brother or an older boy gege, but that changes as they get older especially for boys and especially if the person they are calling is not their actual brother. just strictly talking about an adult male calling another unrelated male gege, it’s almost unheard of because of its cutesy connotation. more common is just “ge” which you can think of as “bro”. for girls, jiejie is common and normal because girls’ speech wouldn’t be criticized for being “cute”. whereas a man calling another unrelated man gege (positions the speaker in a more feminine/cute tone) and not ge is rare non-ironically unless it has a romantic connotation. this why neul cringed when gw called him gege lol
