He can be tangible or intangible at will, actually! He doesn't like to possess things, generally, but he does need to possess something or someone real in order to leave his home. That's why if you visit him he's likely to take up residence in your phone! Whatever he's possessing becomes his new "anchor point" so if you're taking him out on a "vacation" he'll be with you the entire time... unless you forget your phone or something. Please don't do that. It won't be fun for anyone.

To tell the truth, I haven't decided yet. Barthelemy's backstory involves him dropping out of magic school to find his own way, and I'm certain his parents weren't much pleased with that, but the question is if they approve of his dungeon-diving job--are they happy he's making money and (potentially) doing what he loves, or would they prefer he do something safer? There's also the question of their position as nobility: does Barthelemy's choice put a stigma on them?
They'd be happy to meet Hamundr, however--they're probably pretty interested in "foreign" cultures and not likely concerned with any "lineage" concerns, especially since Barthelemy isn't an only child...
