Hi. Do you accept art comissions. I'd love to have a PFP with your art style ^^

when you can or have time doodle ellen joe please
when youre open for commercial work is it ok to inquiry about vtuber character designs or does it not count? ive followed your work for years and your art and designs are truly my favorite! itd be such a dream to get a design by you
heavy breathing I NEED more Dan heng art from you omg it’s so stunning I it’s so wow
Hi, i was wondering if you had any other socials like instagram or tiktok? I didn't wanna follow any fake accounts, so I thought it was safest to just ask you.
would you have any adice on shading?/ how you shade your artwork
this is a tricky question since there are different things about shading i could cover individually haha. but for this reply i'll just go with how i think when i approach shading placement. this might be useful for some, but also entirely unhelpful for those who have issues imagining things (i'm sorry LOL)
light source of course is the first thing that you should keep in mind. which direction is the light coming from? i usually go for somewhere directly above the head if i'm making, like, a character design. just a dude posing.
other than learning technical skills, adjusting my way of thinking when it comes to art helps my brain re-wire itself so i have an easier time knowing how to move forward. for example. instead of staring at my screen and being hyper aware that I Am Drawing, i think about the body of who/what it is i'm looking to make.
i know objects being in the way of light end up blocking it out. if i stick my hand out under my desk lamp, the top of it will be bright and my palm (facing down) will be dark. it's preventing light from getting beneath it, to an extent.
this is basic logic. but i explicitly keep this in mind and imagine what i want to draw as a 3d object, mentally hunting for "things that stick out" as i draw. my process from then on turns into bumping into little run-ins like "oh, the nose is protruding. alright, no light underneath that, then." so on, so forth. i essentially do the exact same thing someone would do if they had one of those anatomy models on hand, except in my head. i draw. stare. continue drawing. stare some more...
if this still gets too hard, i'd highly recommend using yourself and a lamp as a reference if you're unsure of what to do. use your phone to take pictures for reference. it's super helpful. again, this might not be great advice if you have a hard time imagining things, but it's what works for me.
What happened to your twitter! Was it suspended?
Do you work in animation or nayhing of the sort or is art your side gig?
I don't mean to bother you, but would u ever share ur brushes or is there a place I could buy them?
Thank u!!
not a bother at all! if you came here from my neuvi and furina art, the lines are traditional with a mechanical pencil on regular sketchbook paper. coloring is mostly done with CSP brush G-pen (store id: 1699234) and the basic hard brushes. if i ever need to soften edges or want a more watery feel, i use watercolor marker (store id: 1682349). for sketchy lines in CSP i use Artemus Pencil (store id: 1758182)
however, i avoid coloring in CSP for large pictures since it lags. at that point i switch to sai. usually my lineart is done in sai, too. but i'm afraid that brush i got from someone else long ago and i can't find the source, so i wouldn't feel right posting it.
this is still most of it. hope it helps!
Can i cosplay your art
if you don't mind me asking, how do you come up with your genshin designs? all of them are very lovely and they all seem like they would mesh into genshin wonderfully!! even their backstories are great! i wanna be able to be on par with your talent- they're all so good.... i wish they were playable fr. sometimes, i see them in my feed and i get whiplash because i think they're actual leaks but then i go "wait, that's kit's art!!" <3
AHH thank you so much!! i'll write a full step by step so this will be long. note that there's no ultimate correct way to make genshin designs. this is only my own process ->
-
STEP ONE:
i start with tropes i like that aren't in genshin. i write ideas down in notes. this can be a full story off the bat or just a few words. i'll use my fontanian cat boy - silvius - as an example. his written concept was originally simply "pink haired cat boy." because... well. i want there to be a pink haired cat boy.
-
STEP TWO:
i always feel like my character's background needs to have references to other media. this isn't necessary and can be time consuming to piece together, but it's fun for me and genshin characters do tend to be walking references to other things.
for silvius i googled public domain stories - preferrably with ties to france. i found one set in paris ft. a cat and their deceased owner sylvia. i took the masc form of sylvia for silvius. the cat wore his owner's garter as a collar. i'll work this into the design. also, because "sylvia" is the name of the owner and not the cat, i figured it's only a fake name that silvius took from someone dear to him.
-
STEP THREE:
i also go into genshin lore to pair with the irl story ref. each character tends to rep their own little corner of the lore. if there's something that isn't in the game much yet, i'll make the character about that. for example i like the idea of the hexenzirkel witches even though we don't know too much about them yet, so silvius became a witch's cat. the only real risk is that your character might have their story debunked when canon content comes out. but there's also the chance they'll instead be validated, which is a really cool feeling.
these are ideas i wouldn't have come up with without reference. referencing existing stories works like art refs. if you're struggling with ideas it's extremely helpful.
with that done, "pink haired cat boy," is now "a witch's familiar with eye-catching pink hair. his name, sylvius, seems to hide a story much too mournful for his extravagant clothes. only his witch master knows why the cat's gaze occasionally drifts."
-
STEP FOUR:
thumbnailing. i draw super messy because this is just a concept stage. i collect art refs of existing genshin characters to search for repeat patterns. for example, genshin loves to split cloaks, coats and long hair so that they "fork" in the back. stuff like that.
refs of historically accurate clothes are preferred (and at times are a given.) which clothes i reference depends on what social class and/or job my character has. i want their clothes to make sense. silvius doesn't have a job but he LOVES the finer things, so i went with historical french noble clothes. emphasis on noble.
throw in some things you just think look nice and want to include. ofc, if you're making a character who isn't aligned with any nation, you can be loose with most of this step.
-
STEP FIVE:
i put the design next to others from the same nation and/or job. if they don't fit or look too much like someone else, i make adjustments. after that i'm done. i typically don't polish the designs to full illustrations and/or refs. but ofc if you have the time and feel like it then go crazy
THAT'S THE VERY LONG ANSWER BUT THIS IS WHAT I DO STEP BY STEP thank you for reading LMAO
Without giving too much away, what are you working on lately? I’m curious to hear more about what kind of awesome things you’re working on
as for what’s new, i’m loosely thumbnailing vtuber designs with written lore included for those struggling to make something up. i’m hoping to sell these incl commercial rights once i’ve figured out how to properly cut them for rigging. outside of that, just the usual! private owed work and adopts!
Are we allowed to use your character design and art as part of an inspiration board for designing/commissioning a character design?
if it’s only for general inspiration, yes, and as long as it’s not to say “i want a jacket/necklace etc like this one. because i sell my designs i can’t speak for how every owner would feel about it. especially where in the case of custom designs some owners may ask for certain design elements for sensitive and personal reasons. treat it like someone’s tattoo, basically. the gist of it is fine. just don’t copy and don’t pick out specific parts to copy.
