what are your favorite mitski songs & why?

hard question because my favourite songs change every week, BUT I WILL DO MY BEST. ill just ramble about some of my favourites without trying to repeat albums

i love crack baby. it's so good. i love that she uses "crack baby" to represent someone that wants something but doesn't know what it is. the song has a strange off feeling as if something is missing, but you don't know what. it's just very thought out, like the rest of puberty 2

i also really like the frost. it's such a soft song compare to its theme of just being isolated. but it makes sense because she enjoys the cold memories. she's just upset that there's no one there to share it with. the dust being there, showing that she's been waiting this whole time 🫠🫠

a big fan of humpty too!! the escapism of living in the bathtub and wanting to be "cleansed", and then the song being based of humpty dumpy, a fairy-tale is very good. the song also depicts someone going through the stages of grief, denial as she runs away from an environment she feels unsafe with, anger as she threw everything, bargaining and depression as she tries to pick up the eggshells and they crumble with her, and acceptance as she realized she's the problem.

i love i dont smoke too. her lover's kisses tasting like smoke, her being addicted to it, even if she knows she shouldn't because they're destructive. the icon lines of "Just don't leave me alone wondering where you are
I am stronger than you give me credit for" really push this point forward. she would rather be addicted then alone, even if the lover thinks she doesn't know, she does, she always has. she just doesnt want to be alone

i also really like stay soft. compared to the rest of laurel hell, it goes against the common theme of people in vulnerable situations, even after knowing it, but stay soft doesn't. it has the "eat, or you'll be eaten" mentally, but it still shows how messed up a relationship like that can be. the narrator wants to be viewed as some sort of god, that will save her partner. they only need to open up.

and my final song is, abbey. it's a song about feeling empty despite being someone. its about how you are a person, in the way you are breathing and thinking, but who really are you as a person, in terms of your personality? something within the narrator is being kept back, she wants to be known as someone, but how can you be let free?
