If I may add to the anon who is a connoisseur of sunoo fics, I'd say that ships common/general trope is also highly influenced by the most popular fics in the fandom. A trend, if you may. Real life is onviously a major factor, but authors also leave an impact or inspiration to the rest, especially to new authors coming in. Tropes that uniquely stand out and gain traction can easily set precedent to a new set of writers.

Granted, I'm basing this on my experience to my og ships, as a reader and writer myself, where I've seen how things played out in the last decade since I got into them.

It's actually very interesting and incredibly fascinating to witness if you remain long enough and the shipdom is still thriving.

ooh this is a great observation! you’re right that certain tropes can be popularised just from having bigger fics start out with them and creating this ripple effect of new fics inspired by the first. it’s pretty cool and great if you like that trope since you’ll get more of it. then eventually it becomes this sort of ‘label’ or what people identify with that shape. and i’d say anything that deviates or adheres to the norm are all welcome in the fandom :-)
