while he's not in a hurry to die, he does tend to romanticize the idea of dying for something greater than himself or sacrificing himself for someone else, especially if its someone he loves. which isn't really a super high bar; if someone is sufficiently nice to him he would think that as something to repay with his life LOL. so i think the choice is obvious here. it's just not as selfless as he wishes it was. and I'm sure he's aware of that too
