when i draw by myself i like to tune in on live art streams on twitch or youtube if possible, but sometimes u cant find someone whos live rn that you vibe with… in that case some artists have vods or full live videos on youtube! i think having someone drawing in front of me even if im not paying attention is really motivating lol and helps me focus

but if im drawing outside and all i have is my ipad ill just listen to music i like. i like really boppy and energetic songs so i end up mouthing the words or nodding my head to the music while im drawing a lot lol

i do get that hyperfocus mode tho! its worse for me bc i have adhd lol… like i wont eat or drink bc im so locked in and i cant stop until its done 😭 when i get like that sometimes the live stream would end and i deadass wont even notice that its gone quiet LMFAOO i just think its kind of funny

some technical advice i have is to first learn some basic shapes and proportions for the face and body, or just the face first if thats what you want to focus on drawing!! knowing how to lay down guidelines helps to make things less daunting and confusing

some like, more motivational advice i have is to not let perfectionism stop you from drawing what you want to draw, you dont need to learn heads and anatomy so realistically and to the finest detail before starting to draw fanart or ocs! when you have an idea or urge to draw something, just draw it. you dont have to perfect your skills and study forever before drawing for fun for yourself! that takes years 😭

idk how old u are, but i say this bc in general i feel like as u get older ppl find it harder to start bc theyre afraid to fail or think its too late, bc your standards for art are higher than if u were a kid bc at that age everything looks good LOL.

its okay to make “bad” art, just let the brainrot of wanting to draw your fav charas or ocs motivate you to get better! imagine how good itll feel to compare your skill in the future compared to now, growth and improvement feels amazing

it really depends 😭 quick drawings and sketches can take like an hour, a little more if im flat colouring it or adding monochrome tones loosely

if im lining it it potentially doubles my time, and double again if i decide to colour cleanly and shade … i think on average a full colour art is like 4-6 hrs and comics can get to 24 hrs total or more 💀 i also rarely do backgrounds but when i do… for example that one miya twins art was like. 16 hrs i think lol bc i was rendering everything from scratch bc i love 2 torture myself

basically if im drawing for myself and keeping it messy i can be really fast but when i have to make it clean and professional i can take AGES bc i have to do lineart and i can get a little perfectionist with it… and when i colour i have to put more care into colouring between the lines and stuff

i always start by drawing from imagination LOL but whenever it looks like dogshit or im having trouble trying to recreate the image in my head, i will look up refs 🫡

i didnt do it on purpose im just stubborn but i think theres like an actual strategy to learning (shrimp method?) thats basically what i do -> first u attempt to draw from memory, then look for a reference pic and u draw it again with the reference but you actually //look// at it and figure out what you didnt know about it before, u study it and add it to your internal library, then u draw it again with the new info in mind and no reference and thats how u solidify that knowledge in your head

its something i ended up doing on accident on my own lol! but its a legitimate method!!
