Hello! I've seen a few people describe it differently, can you define what Dark Academia implies for this zine?
Hi! This is a very good question. 'Dark Academia' is a tricky term to define since it's characterised for being defined after the fact. We're interpreting 'dark academia' in a loose enough sense to lend space and opportunity for creativity, but we will be following some basic principles of the genre to outline our definition. Get ready, because this is a bit of a lengthy read! <3
Academia: The genre typically focuses on liberal arts, a.k.a. humanities. This means history, philosophy, arts, among others. Though there's usually a focus on higher education especially (just because there's usually more freedom by the time you reach college/university), it's not limited to it. Fundamentally, the key aspect (more so than the context) is the passionate pursuit of knowledge. This means that while traditionally sciences (biology, physics, chemistry, etc) aren't conceived as part of the genre, for this event it'll be less about the subject itself and more about the devotion to academia.
Time period: The genre itself, while timeless, is very reminiscent of a bygone era. This is evidenced moreso in the details (clothing, upkeeping of tradition, usage of pen & paper where we'd usually use the notes app, etc) rather than explicitly mentioned in works. I'd say the focus in this area is less a definite time period and more the portrayal of nostalgia for the past in general. Ultimately — and especially considering BNHA is itself set in the future — we don't want to limit creators to a specified period reference and will guide works more towards being wistful independently of the time period they take place in.
The 'dark' of dark academia: The term 'dark' here is very versatile. It refers not only to the literal dim-lit cinematography, but also a general solemness of the works that characterise it, as well as a penchant towards battling repressive institutions and authorities. This last element takes many forms... wanting to break free from societal conventions, solving a covert crime that's being swept under the rug, standing up against parental expectations, etc. In essence, the 'dark' in 'dark academia' refers to the fact it's never a perfect world, but it could be, if someone were passionate enough about fixing it. It's worth noting, then, that the hope for a better/different world characterises the dark academia genre just as much as the longing for it.
Aesthetic: The rhetoric surrounding dark academia encapsulates 1) the adoration and romanticisation of academia as the means to fix a flawed world, and 2) devotion and the passionate pursuit of understanding (of a topic, of oneself, from others, etc). Visually, dark academia sways towards modest clothing, muted colours, dim lighting, 'oldschool' technology (the definition of which changes according to the period a work is set in — such that it could range from candelabrums and torches to tape recorders and old tube tvs). This event will have a moodboard for contributors, to help both guide and inspire works, but we encourage contributors to make use of their own interpretations of 'dark academia' as well and will be flexible when judging what fits the motif or not.
On tropes & deciding what falls within the scope of this event: There are many recurring elements in popular 'dark academia' works... They're typically set somewhere cold, in a not-urban enough setting that there may be forests, lakes, gardens, etc. Architecture tends to be large and imposing, often gothic or victorian. The 'subject' the work revolves around is typically niche and understudied, dangerous or taboo, or either highly artistic or decidedly cerebral. Protagonists tend to be exceptional individuals, distinctive in one particular trait that's central to the story, broody, complex, and eccentric. Oftentimes there'll be a vice or hamartia — smoking, drinking, excessive ego... While common and definitely in line with the theme, none of these will be required or serve as a proxy for judgement on the 'suitability' for this event. While the general sombre tones are expected, ultimately, the reigning factor for this event will be the sentimentality — the yearning, the devotion, the pining and ambition and resilience — in the context of academia.
Hope this helps! Apologies for the late reply, it was a complex question and required a bit more time than was available over the weekend to reply <3
Hi, can we re-apply if we no longer like the samples we submitted and have nicer ones?
Hello! Of course! Just make sure to use the same email and we'll go with the most recent application~
Hello! Do you have any reading recs for dark academia, whether BNHA fanfic or original work?
Hi! This was such a fun ask <3 Here are some mod team recs...
- Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
- Prince of the Sorrows (Rowan Blood) by Kellen Graves
- Wuthering Heights by Emily Brönte
- And Then There Were None and Murder on the Orient Express, both by Agatha Christie
- Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
As for BNHA fics...
Not sure how dark academia it is but I'd be hard pressed to pass up a chance to rec but i've got an angry heart by newamsterdam (krbk, rated T, mind the tags)
Hi! Are guests all accounted for now?
Hi! No, not yet! We’ll let you know once they are 🤎
What would the procedure be for removing my application?
Hi! We understand. Shoot us a DM and we’ll get that sorted for you!
Eeeek! Seeing the moodboard yall made makes me swoon. Ugh so good
Thank you so much! The mood board (and all our graphics) have been created by our head mod LA, who’s the creative lead behind this project 🤎
How is 52.8% of responders statistically considered "not enough interest" to include a dead dove portion for this zine? That's over half your respondents. I understand if it's simply not content you want to publish, truly I do, but the interest check doesn't seem to reflect your claim at all. (And yes, I already asked this on Twitter, but this seems to be a better way to communicate with your team.)
Hello! Yes, there was interest in a dd section, but every add-on takes work on behalf of the mod team and implies bringing in more contributors in order to deliver a high quality product. The interest wasn't enough for us to justify the endeavour financially or in terms of work load. We prefer to focus on making the 2 sections of the zine with the highest interest; SFW with 91% and NSFW with 80%
Is there a minimum of characters per page?
No! There is no minimum or maximum amount of characters you can draw. You could draw all of 1A if you wished! 🤎 We only ask for pieces that are size B5 and have a background.
What do I do if I made a mistake on my app? :(((
Hello! Don't worry! You can either resend your app using the same email and we'll only consider the second one, or if it's a minor issue (eg. ticked the wrong box on a yes/no question? wanna change your pronouns?) feel free to send us a DM and we'll make that edit for you!
Hi! I was wondering if you had a moodboard or a visual… something… to get a feel for the aesthetic you’re going for. Thank you!
Hi! We do… We’ve had one ready for weeks just waiting for the right time to post 😉. Check it out here!
Hi! I just wanted to say I love the concept of the zine and I’m so excitedddd 🫶🏼
Hello! 🥰 Thank you so much for your kind words!! We’re super excited too! 🤎
I’m sorry, but given the guidelines you just laid out, why is Shinzawa not allowed?
Hi! So in canon Shinsou is a minor student & Aizawa is a teacher adult. We won’t be including minor x adult or teacher x student in canon ships even if aged up.
This is not a rule solely against the shinzawa ship! Please understand that our zine is sfw and nsfw and our major focus of the zine is the dark academia theme.
Whilst shipping is allowed it is not the focus of our aesthetic themed zine and we aim to keep our audience appeal as wide reaching as possible .🤎
Can you be less vague about this ships thing, please? I believe that's where confusion is coming from. Are you barring all aged up ships, yes or no? If yes, why? If no, what's the criteria for barring certain ships?
Hi! Sorry for the confusion 😅. Let's clear things a few things up then!
1. Are you barring all aged up ships, y/n? No! Aging up is okay. Why? Put simply, we don't see why not! We all age and with age come different life experiences and possibilities that would be fun to explore. Wouldn't you love to see the UA students become the UA teachers, for example 🤎
2. Then... What's the criteria for barring certain ships? The hard guidelines are: ||underage, paedophilia/lolisho, gratuitous gore/non-canon-typical violence, vore/cannibalism, scat, noncon, adult x minor ships||.
Hi. I saw you consider aged-up relationships dead dove, is this correct?
Hello! Thank you for expressing your concerns. I think it's important to point out we haven't at any point categorised aged up ships as 'inherently problematic’. We were asked about a specific ship in a previous retrospring question and took a decision based on its canon relationship dynamics (and the fact our zine isn't ship-focused but *theme-*focused.)
Thankfully, this zine is not the only fandom space there is to create or consume ships. We highly encourage anyone that would like to see/read that ship to take that creative drive and write their own story! Just in a separate space. Thank you for understanding! 🤎
Hi! Will aged up Shinsou/Aizawa be DQ'd?
Hello! It’s okay as a sample but isn’t a ship that’ll be allowed in the zine; aged up or not! Thank you for checking~
does the portfolio have to be only 5 pieces or do you accept a full portfolio?
Hi! A larger portfolio is okay however we strongly encourage you to put your best/favourite 5 pieces at the beginning of your portfolio. Depending on the volume of applications or the number of pieces in your portfolio, we might not be able to look at all your pieces individually, so put your best foot forward!
