im really curious to hear ur thoughts about what u enjoy in cyhaino
They met at the worst possible time and at the same time at the best possible time. Out of all people they had the most reasons to distrust each other, yet the qualities that made them suspicious are the qualities they most respect in the other. Cyno is an independent force, which Alhaitham appreciates in people who don’t let themselves be influenced or peer pressured; Alhaitham prioritizes order, which Cyno feels reassured by as a guardian of rules. The tension born of distrust in the aq was so tasty because of this, the fact Alhaitham kept insisting they were in the same position (as targets of the Akademiya) when he didn’t really care about working with others? Tasty. The way Alhaitham makes Cyno confront his own faults? Delicious. The way Cyno talks about Tighnari in his voiceline is exactly the same he talks about Haitham, just with a layer of reluctance. Cyno claims he admires Tighnari for refusing a job in the Akademiya, so now imagine how he feels about Alhaitham rejecting the whole Grand Sage position. Alhaitham might operate without much regard for following conventions and laws himself, but he does depend on the order upheld by the rules Cyno enforces to lead his quiet calm life.
Despite it all, they like each other, beyond their titles and their lifestyles, they just genuinely fuck with each other’s principles and motivations. It’s thanks to that that they saved their archon and their nation. How do u walk away from ur imperfect match afterwards? Also sex with them claws in grand sage office on the clock.
not that anon but considering they sent an ask into retrospring abt it i think theyd like to hear ur thoughts (and others (me!!!) would as well). understandable if u dont wanna take my word for it because im not them but i wouldnt worry abt that anon Not wanting ur input on this when a) they sent the ask in and b) they say theyre touching on similar points as to what youve discussed
I was starting to formulate this when I read ur Cyno2SQ thoughts but you ended up touching on similar points anyways, so this is mostly reiterating but the writing of the Desert vs Rainforest "conflict" in Sumeru feels slightly taunting/patronizing.
It is so obviously an ethnic issue and yet centrism rhetoric is abound about how the oppressed are to blame for "prejudice" against the privileged,
& just like in Jeht WQs, Tanit WQs Order of Skeptics WQs, the AQs and multiple SQs, cutscene lore bombs are added to provide in-universe justification to blame Desert dwellers for their own languishing right after lecturing them for blaming the other side of the (apartheid)Wall of Samiel.
The most patronizing part is how blatantly the "barbaric savage tribe v erudite civilized metropole" Desert v Rainforest writing follows Orientalist Tropes 101, almost to a T, but hardly anyone points out how blatant this all is.
But anyways, one part I semi-agree-disagree with you is the resolution. Like you said, the narrative & Cyno himself provides flimsy(if not nonexistent) justification for why he should keep the power of Hermanubis, whereas to Sethos it is the last remnant of his entire culture, heritage, upbringing and faith.
Sethos is much more compelling for a protagonized depiction, whereas Cyno (as the top enforcing agent of the Akademiya that enforces the apartheid-like divisions of their 2-nation-states) simply seems to use "might is right" justification for his position. It feels so colonial.
Ofc, it would be remiss to not point out that the nature of the gacha holds this back. Cyno's kit already has Hermanubis imagery, so at the very least they won't canonically take it away (even tho they could still do it IMO)
As such, since Sethos has not been gacha-banner'ed yet, his writing is allowed to be fluid & not set in stone throughout this quest, making him more dynamic.
But my main gripe with the ending resolution to have Cyno takeover as head of a people & culture he knows nothing about and shows little interest in, is that Cyno could've been made to actually feel like a protagonist and challenge his worldview if he actually let the power be returned to its indigenous caretakers, regardless of the result of the duel.
It is simply just not compelling at all to just "powerup" the trivia-fact-tier spirit that powers Cyno's kit when we just got an entire plotline & character faction who are shown to actually care for the spirit that Cyno just uses for gameplay.
It all feels like a continuation of the colonial paternalism that plagues all of the Deshret desert nation writing.
And that's not even going into how the problem of genuinelycompletely unrelated filler dialogue in the quest.
All the fan grumbling of "NPC quests" regarding NPCs that are important to the themes of the story went out the window now that playables were brought in to do genuine actual line count inflation for no actual narrative reason. It was hard to sit thru just for the actually compelling part (Sethos+the ToS) being only give like 15 minutes.
Are you planning on trying out Wuthering Waves?
Can you relate with me in loving the fact that Sethos’ design almost seems like a counter to Cyno’s? While not minding that he’s just not taller than him like Alhaitham?
Do we ever get to learn of how Inazuman’s feel after the civil war about the Raiden Shogun? How rocky do think things could get in terms of unity when it comes to the upcoming “war” that was foreshadowed?
They don't resent her or anything of that sort, I have never found an npc that says something negative about her. As far as inazumans know, Takayuki deceived their archon and he'll be rightfully punished, they don't know the things the player knows. Even during the war I think the npcs just didn't understand why the Raiden Shogun was allowing the war but wanted her to make her reconsider the decrees, they didn't hold any grudge even at that time. I my opinion it's because the archon in inazuma is a permanent and unquestionable existence, they would never think she's wrong in what she does and she's more deeply a symbol of hope. (im not saying hoyo wrote it right, but that's what it is to me)
The only ones who have been shown to resent the Raiden Shogun alongside the shogunate are watatsumi soldiers (from kokomi's sq and I think there is a npc that expresses resentmen) but most of the npcs in the area are just relieved that there is no war anymore.
I think if there is eventually a major war where inazuma is involved, it would be the same as when the Cataclysm happened, so there wouldn't be a problem between the archon and her people. And hoyo is speedrunning the reconciliation between watatsumi and narukami, so like Yae said they'd support the Raiden Shogun too most likely. At least one npc acknowledges they were disrespecting orobashi's remains and the yashiro commission has good relations with sangonomiya, plus the peace talks and kokomi's iniciative to reduce tension among her troops.. seems it'll be ok
I might have missed npcs tho, it's been a while since I went around checking and I'm biased with inazuma so maybe I missed something in an event or something like that (if I did I do would like to be told bc it would make the stoty a lot more interesting 😭)

your ei threads / posts were always 10/10 loved them i miss it 🥹
Hello, please excuse if my English comes off incomprehensible! I wanted to ask you, since you’re experienced in analysing gnsn characters and their references to literature, if a character had references to literature works written by a queer poet, does that make the character indefinitely and explicitly queer as well? Or can these references be purely references without dictating a canon sexuality? I personally feel the latter, but I’d like to know your thoughts! I’ve seen people crucify others for shipping these characters with the opposite gender, and while I personally don’t pay mind to and couldn’t care for ship discourse, I’m still curious about my first question. (Context, or rather the source of my dilemma is from H*SR, can’t dm you the analysis on twt but you can search up Av3nturine and Osc@r W!lde, specifically his work ‘The H@ppy Prince’) (sorry for the censors I don’t want this showing up in search results 😭)
The only things I know about hsr is what I see on tl from mutuals who talk or rt about it 😔 the blond little guy is very pretty but I don't know much about his story or the relationship with other characters, so I can't rly comment on that, but about the question: it depends.
I wouldn't say that if a queer author is referenced in media that it immediately gives the work queer subtext or coding, but Oscar Wilde is one whose queerness was an integral part of his work. Even if the devs chose to reference The Happy Prince blindly only for narrative purposes unrelated to a character's sexual orientation.. the couple in the story is still gay and their relationship is an important part of this work by an iconic queer author who wrote from a queer perspective.
In terms of what I've seen hoyoverse do with authors in genshin, they do choose some not just because of the content of their works but also who they were as a person (things like their legacy, their role in history, their importance in their respective field), even if it's a small reference it feels quite intentional in the bigger context. For example, Alhaitham has a line at the end of his demo that references a poem by Rabindranath Tagore ("the profoundest eternal questions are met only with a boundless and eternal silence") and I don't want to ramble but it does feel that referencinh this specific poet from the perspective of this specific character in the context of Sumeru has a purpose.
I haven't played hsr and I don't know the lore or how the writing works, so my opinion doesn't matter, but that's my very uninformed answer
