Hiii!! I wanna get into wrestling but I don't know where to start. May I ask for suggestions?
yes of course!!! you should first choose a promotion you want to get into. if you really wanna learn the basics of matches and storytelling then i do recommend watching a little of one of the major western promotions like AEW or WWE, as their shows are the most accessible for english speakers. watch a few matches on youtube, maybe tune into a whole show, the commentators will help a lot with just getting to grips of how pro wrestling works. im not a huge fan of wwe anymore but starting in january, it will be streaming live on netflix which will make it a lot more accessible to more people. both shows also have websites with the shows rosters if anyone catches your eye. i always think the best way of getting into wrestling is to find someone who looks interesting, and learning about their story in particular.
heres some match recommendations from wwe/aew (only womens matches, i only watch womens wrestling lol):
Sasha Banks vs Bayley: NXT Takeover Brooklyn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qA9E1CHe_M
Charlotte Flair vs Becky Lynch: Evolution https://youtu.be/jolQfrzjOR4?si=-juo8oz8ljJA-72i
Iyo Sky vs Bianca Belair: Backlash https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b07JpBMb-ds
Mercedes Moné vs Kris Statlender: Full Gear https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSF4DFCjUw0
Mariah May vs Toni Storm: All In https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1oeYr_8hWY
WWE Women's Royal Rumble, 2018 (this was the match that made me a wrestling fan!!) https://youtu.be/gv7luLwCSJ4?si=KrbowOBvOKD6jVEM
if you wanna jump right in with my fave promotion, stardom, then you could do that too! it can just be a little more difficult since a majority of the material is in japanese. they do however have an english twitter account @we_are_stardom. check out the roster page for stardom, pick a wrestler/group you like the look of, and start researching https://wwr-stardom.com/fighters/. i think stardom is a great promotion if you love the relationships between characters. every single wrestler in stardom is part of a group, so its easier to understand who are their friends/enemies. the best way to keep up with stardom is following their twitter account @wwr_stardom and following accounts of some of the wrestlers youre interested in. the account is very good at uploading constantly throughout shows so you dont miss anything big happening. you could keep up with storylines just by following the twitter alone. theres a lot of match highlights on their youtube channel too. you could subscribe to their streaming service, or sail the seven seas and check out watchprowrestlings.org (how i watch most of my wrestling lol). i really recommend the videos by @joshi4all on youtube for good lore backgrounds on a few wrestlers, to get you into stardom's storytelling
every week on their youtube, stardom uploads We are STARDOM!!! which is about half an hour of big recent matches, really good to get a taste of their wrestling https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCs8EA-kFD1j25a7wKaHNIFxuUHAqVArp
most major wrestling promotions will have a pay-per-view show every month, these can be really good gateways into a show. they tend to put little lore videos before each match so you can understand the story going into it. you can google '[promotion] pay per views' to find a list of recent ones if you want to go and watch one
best advice i can give to a new wrestling fan is to just explore. theres so much wrestling content online with so many dedicated fans so if youre interested in anything in particular just jump in and start searching on google or youtube or social media. it can seem really overwhelming but dont think that you have to know everything about your favourite wrestler or how to be a wrestling fan, just start incredibly casually and you'll eventually start to understand what you like and what keeps bringing you back for more. most importantly dont listen to the majority of wrestling fans on twitter if they tell you whats good and whats bad, wrestling is good if you enjoy it, and thats all that matters
