Will you pay the ferryman before he gets you to the other side ?

There are three versions. You pay in advance, you pay 1/2 in advance and 1/2 afterwards, you pay afterwards. Each has pros and cons. In case the ferryman is a pirate all of these end in desaster.

What happens if you don't? I mean why not just chill by the river bank? Does Charon just throw your ass overboard if you board without paying?
