A preference. And not my thing.

The hardest thing to accept for some is that this kind of thing is even less realizable with the shape of economy introduced after the Bretton Woods Agreement was repealed in the early 70s, and even then, both of my own parents had a job to support four children by the 90s.

Don't really have much of a thought. The profit motivation isn't as high or nonexistent, so the chances the banner gets blocked by adblockers are much lower.

Do you think hardware manufacturers are right to keep yapping about AI or is it a bubble that will burst and make them regret investing so much in it?

That's an interesting question because I think it's mostly the former.

Yapping about AI: AI has its uses. Generation, filtering, discovery, insight intelligence, assistance (in general), etc. For example, I don't use Copilot, but many do, and find it useful. However, as the advancements keep coming, just like any other tools, we'll need to better educate and train people if we'll be using these tools in the workforce (if I'm reviewing PRs, I'll probably notice and have a lot to say!). I use various AIs to search the web more effectively, and it really helps on more common topics, but keep a skeptical eye and sometimes double-check on the more niche topics. Like all mankind creations, it's imperfect, but will improve in time.

Bubble: AI is still recent, so it's still a big topic to most people (even if AI was a research topic for more than several decades, even Intel made the 80170 in this regard). The talks will possibly never die as long as manufacturers keep advertising AI.

Why is x86 still used?

De facto platform, long legacy, support, compatibility, still performant, etc.

Same with banks with System/360 and zArchitecture platforms. The COBOL codebase still kicks on newer hardware.

Is it possible to get away with not knowing French while living in Québec? Is it a serious handicap?

While there are English private schools and establishments, it's possible, especially if you live in Montréal, but most services will (and have to) serve you in French first, by law, as we wish to remain, primarily, a French-speaking province.

It is a handicap, but not a very serious one, you'll still be able to travel just fine, as at least half of the population of Montréal can speak English.
