Humans are rational. They can be, they have that aspect to them, but a lot of the time it doesn't come into play.

I heard somewhere, people usually decide things before thinking about them, and then rationalize them ex post.

People like to seem consistent, get entrenched in their opinions, and ignore the path the got them there. Maybe the work to remember is bothersome. Also it can be tied to emotional mess which they might not want to deal with.
