Honestly, for Elio, while he's not really all that competitive - he does go all-out whenever he's up against someone else that's just as, if not more experienced than him; it's especially true when it comes to Pokemon Contests and standard battling. Holding back is the same as looking down on them, and Elio doesn't insult his opponents in such a manner u̶n̶l̶e̶s̶s̶ ̶a̶ ̶c̶e̶r̶t̶a̶i̶n̶ ̶s̶c̶e̶n̶a̶r̶i̶o̶ ̶w̶a̶r̶r̶a̶n̶t̶s̶ ̶i̶t̶.̶

It's especially the case whenever his younger siblings are involved since he instinctually knows that they prefer for him to give it his all, which, in turn, brings their A-game and helps them improve.
